Superman & Lois Image Highlights How Comic Accurate The Show Is

Superman and Lois actress Bitsie Tulloch shares a candid behind-the-scenes shot illustrating the show's comic book-inspired lighting and action. The latest show to come out of the Arrowverse, Superman and Lois features Tulloch as Lois Lane and Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman. Both characters first appeared in Supergirl, taking part in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, before getting their own spinoff. The plot revolves around the pair moving back to Smallville with their two sons, Jordan (Alex Garfin) and Jonathan (Jordan Elsass), and features Clark having to balance family with his duties as Superman.

The premiere episode featured Jordan's superpower origin story (with a silly plot hole) and introduced the series' main villain, played by Wolé Parks. Originally promoted as a mysterious new villain in the universe, the pilot episode's climactic battle revealed that Parks is playing a version of Lex Luthor, who has come from another universe to prove that the world doesn't need Superman. Besides the not-so-surprising twist, the episode impressed with its visual approach, which is much more cinematic than some of the other recent Arrowverse shows, and gives Superman and Lois a distinctly comic book-inspired look.

Now Tulloch has posted a behind-the-scenes shot on Twitter, which reinforces Superman and Lois' comics inspired visual approach. The image is an unedited, candid shot of Hoechlin as Superman standing over the prone figure of Parks as Captain Luthor. The lighting, setting and stance all make the image look like it could be featured as a full-page panel in a Superman comic, or perhaps even a cover. Tulloch's shot also frames the action with a dutch angle, giving it even more of a comic book look. The actress acknowledges as much, crediting the show's director of photography Gavin Struthers for "establishing the look" of the show. You can see the image below:

It really is a striking image, and proof of how committed the show is to acknowledging its comic book roots, even if just from a visual perspective. Superman and Lois has already impressed fans with its cinematography, and the hope is that the quality will remain high throughout the show's run, elevating the Arrowverse beyond some of the more average shows that have been produced for the CW in recent years.

The hope is that the story can also stay high quality, living up to the comics-worthy visuals. The pilot was promising, setting up an interesting origin for Luthor and re-establishing one of the great rivalries in the superhero genre, with the "Captain" intent on destroying the Man of Steel. The signs are good for Superman and Lois, and the show has a great chance to establish itself simply by following the comic book-inspired template set up in the pilot.
