Justice League 2 Would Have Featured Harley Quinn Death Scene

Director Zack Snyder reveals that Justice League 2 would have included a scene depicting the demise of Harley Quinn. The Snyder Cut, which premiered this past week, debuted to largely positive reviews, although many critics remained wary of the need for a four-hour runtime. Marketed as a narrative remedy to the much-maligned original Justice League, which hit theaters in 2017, Snyder was able to rebuild his initial cinematic vision for the DCEU with financial backing from Warner Bros.

In the DC universe, former psychiatrist Harley Quinn, infamous for her tortured relationship and eventual estrangement from the Joker, has maintained a strong foothold in comics and spinoff cartoons since the nineties. However, she made her live-action debut in the 2016 film Suicide Squad, which follows a group of imprisoned supervillains as they execute missions under duress for a secret government agency. Although Jared Leto’s Joker returned for reshoots, Robbie ultimately did not make an appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. However, her character was referenced in the Knightmare epilogue, with Batman mentioning to the Joker that she died in his arms.

While speaking to Esquire, Snyder shared his original plans for multiple installments of the Justice League, including a sequel that explored the deaths of Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and Lois Lane. In the director’s sequel, Cyborg would have witnessed a vision of these tragic moments. When asked if these stories would later be explained via expositional dialogue, Snyder responded, “No, we were going to shoot those. And they would have had elements of what Cyborg sees.”

Many fans were surprised by the ending of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which featured an unexpected cliffhanger. In interviews, Snyder himself has acknowledged that it is unlikely he will have the opportunity to direct sequels or spinoffs of his film, which prompted the confusion from viewers anticipating some form of narrative closure. However, Snyder provided clarification regarding his decision, noting that a cliffhanger is very much a part of the ethos of the genre. As he articulated, “[A] superhero movie doesn't really have an ending. It has a chapter break, but you never want to close the book a hundred percent.” He explained that he found the ending “hopeful and optimistic” because it established “the vision for future movies.”

Ultimately, Harley Quinn will survive to share more of her adventures, even if it's not in Justice League 2. Robbie herself has advocated for thoughtful, nuanced storylines following her character, which previously resulted in her standalone feature Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). She is also set to reprise her role in The Suicide Squad, as well as possible returns in two more DCEU movies. Robbie clearly isn't done with the character just yet, but seeing Harley Quinn's death in one of Snyder's Justice League sequels would have made for an interesting scene with Batman. Unfortunately, it looks like that scene may never see the light of day.
