Bollywood: System Shock 2 Remake VR Support Teased By Developer

System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition may well have support for virtual reality devices, with a recent social media post from developer Nightdive Studios teasing the inclusion of the technology. The sequel is part of the series that inspired BioShock, with the first title in the franchise launching in 1994. Yet, the series has been largely dormant since 1999 when System Shock 2 released to widespread critical acclaim but limited commercial success.

The System Shock and System Shock 2 remakes were revealed in 2015, with Nightdive Studios announcing that it was working on a complete update of the original titles. Although very little has been detailed about what the remakes will include or how they will look, the studio has released a few screenshots and trailers in the intervening years.

In a Twitter post confirming that System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition is still in development, Nightdive Studios teased that the remake will support virtual reality tech. A video in the social media post includes footage of a developer using what looks like Valve's Index VR device to play the game. From what can be seen in the video, it looks as if the player's movement is translated directly into the game, allowing users to swing objects like wrenches around as effective weapons. Of course, there's nothing official about the game actually supporting VR, although the tease would suggest it will be included.

In contrast to the seemingly good news about the continuing development of System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, progress on System Shock 3 appears to have stalled completely. It emerged last year that the future of the game was uncertain with developer OtherSide Entertainment unable to secure a publishing deal. This was followed by the mass exodus of senior designers and programmers at the developer—although there has been talk of the project being resurrected.

The original System Shock 2 was well known as an atmospheric and creepy game with many horror elements mixed in with the first-person shooter gameplay. Being able to play the game in VR would definitely be an exciting prospect considering that it gives players the opportunity to experience the game from a more immersive perspective. However, the tease only shows System Shock 2, meaning that it is unclear whether VR will also be available in the remake of the first entry in the series as well.
