Star Wars: 5 Of Boba Fett's Biggest Mistakes In Canon (& 5 In Legends)
Despite having limited screen time in the Star Wars movies and a tertiary presence in Star Wars Legends, Boba Fett is one of the most popular characters in the franchise. Season 2 of The Mandalorian cemented his reputation as one of the most formidable bounty hunters in the galaxy, and The Book of Boba Fett, his new spin-off series on Disney+, will only add to his legacy. Nevertheless, with so many creative minds behind that legacy, it was inevitable that Fett wouldn't be completely free from aspersions.
Different creative choices have been made for Fett over the years, some depicting him as a cool and calculating villain, and others as a reckless, credit-obsessed hustler. The resulting disparity in his behavior has led to him appearing just as fallible as the rest of the characters in the Star Wars universe, and capable of making some pretty big mistakes.
10 Canon: Spatial Awareness
In one of the most embarrassing episodes of his career, Boba Fett's Z-6 jetpack was set off by an errant spear held by a half-blind Han Solo. Having some of the best equipment in the galaxy couldn't make up for a complete lack of spatial awareness. Fett's pack was still comprised of canisters of pressurized, combustible fuel that required a great deal of control to maneuver.
Fett was unable to steer his jetpack with his wrist device, and when the pack was set off he didn't have enough time to course-correct given the proximity of Jabba's sail barge. He struck it at full speed and then went tumbling into the open maw of the Sarlacc Pit.
9 Legends: Underestimating Darth Vader
In the Dark Horse comic Enemy of the Empire, Boba Fett partnered with Darth Vader several years before the events of The Empire Strikes Back. Vader tasked him with finding a particular artifact that could alter the galaxy's fate, a job that ended up putting Fett in a precarious position.
Though Fett correctly assumed Vader would put a tracking device on Slave I, he failed to predict Vader would also send three assassins to kill him, despite the fact that knowledge of Vader's artifact ensured that Fett could not live after he completed the job. Fett ended up fighting for his life against the Dark Lord on Maryx Minor.
8 Canon: Not Getting His Armor From Cobb Vanth
Boba Fett fans found out in The Mandalorian Season 2 that the bounty hunter's famous armor had been the property of an imposter for years. Fett seemed to know exactly where Din Djarin was every time he visited Tatooine, yet he hadn't bothered to investigate rumors of a "Mandalorian" sporting the telltale armor in Mos Pelgo.
Even though Mos Pelgo wasn't on any common maps, it would have been easy enough to find after some conversations with locals. Fett wasted a lot of time and resources tracking the armor off-world, only to take it at gunpoint from Djarin, a much more dangerous option than pulling it off the cooling body of its previous owner, Cobb Vanth.
7 Legends: Getting Eaten By The Sarlacc (Again)
In the short story "A Barve Like That: The Tale Of Boba Fett," from the Legends anthology "Tales from Jabba's Palace," Boba Fett was said to have escaped the Sarlacc only to be snatched up by Jawas. He eventually had a run-in with Leia Organa and Han Solo, but rather than play dead when they raided the Sandcrawler, he decided to make a quick escape.
It was at this point that he got eaten by the Sarlacc a second time, which forced him to have to spend time bonding with Susejo (one of its victims who provided a sentient connection for the centuries-old beast) in order to trick it and use his jetpack to escape again.
6 Canon: Leaving The High Ground
Both Din Djarin and Boba Fett made errors in judgment during their stand-off in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. Fett and Fennec had an enviable visual on Djarin but lost it to engage Imperial stormtroopers at close range. Fennec was able to see the stormtroopers from her hill and could have easily shot from that position.
The stormtroopers died quickly, and Fett got one of the greatest action sequences in any Star Wars media, but it seemed unnecessarily risky for a bounty hunter like him. He was known to make calculated moves, like predicting Han Solo would conceal the Millennium Falcon in Imperial garbage before tailing him to Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back.
5 Legends: Revealing His Face To His Competition
In the story "Payback", from the Legends anthology "Tales of the Bounty Hunters," cybernetically enhanced gunsel Dengar (seen briefly on the bridge of the Star Destroyer Executor in The Empire Strikes Back) finally got a crack at tracking down Han Solo, a prize that notoriously went to Boba Fett.
While attempting to recoup his losses after the events of Return of the Jedi, he encountered a struggling Fett after his encounter with the Sarlacc. Fett revealed his true countenance to his rival, which seemed not only uncharacteristic but also unwise given how necessary it was to protect his identity at the time.
4 Canon: Destroying His Father's Helmet
After the Battle of Geonosis, Boba Fett was understandably enraged. He had watched helplessly as Jedi Master Mace Windu killed his father right in front of him, all but ensuring that the boy would one day grow up to exact revenge on the Jedi Order. In The Clone Wars Season 2 episode "R2 Come Home," that's exactly what he did.
Boba Fett ended up blowing up his own father's helmet in an attempt to murder Master Windu but was ultimately unsuccessful. Fett was able to recover part of it, but he effectively tarnished a precious heirloom, and whatever it was replaced with — some fans have argued durasteel — it wasn't as effective (given its infamous dent).
3 Legends: Going After Han Solo (One Last Time)
In the Legends anthology "Tales of the Bounty Hunters," a galaxy-weary Boba Fett decided that though 15 years had passed since he'd emerged from the Sarlacc, he still needed to find and kill Han Solo, who was going through something of a mid-life crisis.
Fett located Solo while he was trying to "get into trouble" on Jubilar and relive a little of the excitement of his glory days. With one completely artificial leg and a metabolic system so degraded by the Sarlacc Pit that he had to stave off cancer daily, Fett was in no position to do so, either, and nearly got himself killed.
2 Canon: Crisping Spies On Coruscant
In the anthology novel "From A Certain Point Of View," a segment featured Boba Fett mulling over Lord Vader's warning, "No Disintegrations!" over a bungled job he did on Coruscant.
An excerpt from the 2017 book read, "He's [Vader] still got a mad on over those rebel spies I crisped on Coruscant. Idiots came at me with ion disruptors. What, they thought I wouldn't carry a weapon accelerator? Flash, boom, three tiny ash piles. Tried to collect and Lord 'No Disintegrations!' refused to pay without bodies.". Because of his earlier mistake, Fett had to drop another job to try to find R2-D2 and C-3PO on Tatooine for the Dark Lord but was unsuccessful.
1 Legends: Not Cashing In On Luke's Bounty
While fans speculated Boba Fett hung around Jabba's Palace after delivering Han Solo because of a hefty retainer, Legends provided a more meaningful reason. In "Tales of the Bounty Hunters," it's stated that Fett knew that Luke Skywalker would come to rescue his friend eventually, and Fett hoped he would be able to persuade Jabba to let him keep Luke alive so he could be turned over to Darth Vader.
Unfortunately, after Luke killed Jabba's pet Rancor, the Jedi was sentenced to death. Had Fett been able to abscond with Luke sometime the night before his execution, or in the chaos over the Pit of Carkoon, he might have been able to cash in on the biggest bounty in the galaxy — 5 million credits.
