How Many Chapters The Last of Us 2 Has | Screen Rant

Throughout the course of The Last of Us Part 2's story, players take control of three characters, following them through a series of brutal, traumatic events. It's a controversial tale that's led to much fan outcry, but it's undoubtedly one that made an impact, as evidenced by The Last of Us 2's Best Narrative win at The Game Awards 2020. Telling this kind of story meant a long and winding campaign with overlapping timelines, so how many chapters does The Last of Us Part 2 have?

When The Last of Us 2 story details leaked online before its release, fans were worried about the direction this new narrative would take. A crucial character's death early in the story made these fears real for many who loved the first game, and lots still deride the game's use of certain twists and plot devices. Others found the story quite compelling, however, making The Last of Us 2 perhaps the most controversial AAA game in many years.

The Last of Us 2's story contains 45 total chapters, separated into 11 major acts. The acts are easy to follow, as they appear on-screen in large letters, identifying the setting and breaking up the game into its major narrative beats. Individual chapters, though, don't easily identify themselves, but a list can be found through the Chapter Select option on the main menu. Each chapter becomes available as it's completed, giving players a chance to replay particular sections or find collectibles they may have missed.

The game's very first chapter, "Prologue," gives players control of Joel as he returns to Jackson. This small community in Wyoming is where Joel and Ellie have taken residence after the events of the first The Last of Us. The remaining six chapters in the "Jackson" act follow Ellie and offer the player some insight into her personal relationships, as well as some of the events that have transpired in the five years since Part 1. Ellie remains the playable character for the next 15 chapters, spanning three acts: "Seattle Day 1," "Seattle Day 2," and "Seattle Day 3." After completing Ellie's third day in Seattle, the player takes control of Abby in an introductory act and chapter, titled "The Park" and "Tracking Lesson," respectively. Here, the timeline rewinds, and Abby's story during those same three days in Seattle is told over the course of three acts, totaling 17 chapters.

The player is given control over Ellie once again for a brief interlude before the final leg of the story begins, in which the player switches between the two protagonists more frequently. This happens in the last major act, "Santa Barbara," over the course of four chapters. The long and heart-rending story finally comes to a close in a final chapter, simply titled "Epilogue."

While The Last of Us Part 2 remains divisive among players, it received almost universal acclaim from critics due to its ambitious storytelling and gameplay improvements over the first game. Naughty Dog once again delivered what it promised - an engaging single-player experience rich in character development and interaction.
