Bachelor: Abigail, A Hearing Impaired Woman, Is Matt James' Current Frontrunner

After two weeks of lonely quarantine and countless COVID-19 tests, the 30 women were cast for Matt James' season of The Bachelor. And talk, dark, and handsome Matt certainly didn't disappoint.

Matt, who is also making history as the first Black lead on The Bachelor, was overwhelmed on night one. As he stood outside the massive Nemacolin Resort anticipating the arrival of the ladies, the 29-year-old's nerves were evident. Unlike most Bachelor stars, he was never featured on the show before. Matt was originally chosen to vie for Clare Crawley's heart, but was plucked from the lineup to be the main man instead. Gradually, he came into his own as each woman concocted a memorable entrance. Whether it was wearing goat slippers or strolling up in lingerie, the creativity was high among the group. But one person stood out the most to Matt, one who was simply being herself: Abigail.

Abigail Heringer is a 25-year-old client financial manager from Beaverton, Oregon, and she immediately told Matt James during The Bachelor premiere about her hearing impairment. He was completely understanding. As reported by Vulture, Abigail wears cochlear implants, which pick up sound with a microphone. During their one-on-one time at the cocktail party, the two hit it off and shared a sweet kiss. Abigail, who often reads lips to help her understand what someone is saying, developed a really good connection with Matt right away. After their kiss, Matt awarded her with his first impression rose. Matt said, "I felt like you were everything that I've been asking of these women tonight ... and knowing you're a fighter, I felt it was appropriate."

Naturally, many of the other contestants saw red when they didn't receive that special rose. Maddest of them all was "Queen" Victoria Larson, a 27-year-old from Los Angeles, California. Though Victoria was confident in her abilities to be a frontrunner, it's a possibility that Matt isn't looking for the influencer type. When taking into consideration both girls' Instagram accounts, there's a stark contrast. While Vikki's page is chock-full of bikinis and glam looks, Abigail's is totally relatable.

By giving Abigail the first impression rose, Matt set a precedent for the season. Despite being close friends with The Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron, who has been linked to high-profile models like Gigi Hadid and Elizabeth Turner, the glitz and glam don't seem to impress Matt. If Abigail is any indication of what he's looking for in a future wife, qualities like being down-to-earth and family-oriented are probably more important than a fake crown.
