Bollywood: Why One Of Frozen's Popular Songs Was Added After Bad Test Screenings

Josh Gad explains why one of Frozen's best songs wasn't included in the film until after some bad test screenings. Very few people were prepared for how popular Disney's Frozen would be when it first came out in 2013, but it didn't take long for the film to become a major part of pop culture. Frozen tells the story of sisters Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell), the former of whom has magical abilities. When Elsa's powers are exposed to the world, she sets off an eternal winter throughout the kingdom of Arendelle, and it's up to Anna save everyone, including Elsa herself.

Like most Disney movies, Frozen is perhaps best known for its infectious soundtrack. While "Let It Go" is undoubtedly the most popular song, the film has plenty of other beloved hits, including "Do You Want To Build A Snowman?" That song comes at the beginning of the film and shows the deterioration of Anna and Elsa's relationship as they grow up and apart. The title has become a notable pop culture reference in its own right, and many have praised the song as an effective way to establish the two characters.

However, "Do You Want To Build A Snowman?" wasn't initially included in Frozen. Gad, who voices lovable snowman Olaf, recently appeared on PeopleTV's Couch Surfing and shared an interesting tidbit about this iconic song. Apparently, the first test screenings for Frozen were "a mess," and songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez sought to remedy this with a "moment where we really see the girls' affection for each other early on." That was what led to the creation of "Do You Want To Build A Snowman?", and Gad said, "I left it there being like, 'I think we hit the mark," after showing the song to his wife.

It's hard to imagine Frozen now without that song since it plays such a pivotal role in both the plot and Elsa and Anna's lives. Last year's Frozen 2 attempted to replicate the success of the first film when it came to its soundtrack, but even then some of the best songs were nearly left out. Elsa's showstopper "Show Yourself" was nearly removed from the final cut of Frozen 2, though thankfully, that decision was reversed. While none of the songs from Frozen 2 really came close to the popularity of "Let It Go," there are still several memorable songs to be found.

In a way, it's actually a good thing that Frozen's first test screenings went so poorly. Otherwise, "Do You Want To Build A Snowman?" would've never been written. Frozen still managed to become a massive hit and was clearly able to win over audiences everywhere. While Frozen 3 isn't official just yet, there are undoubtedly many who are curious to see what songs the third film can cook up. The real question is, can they possibly surpass the ones that came before?
