Bollywood: The Walking Dead Is Returning Like You’ve Never Seen It Before

Fans of The Walking Dead comics are about to get a good excuse to shamble back to the series from the beginning with new colorized deluxe editions hitting store shelves soon, Image Comics just announced. And beyond a new paint job, the books will come with all new material readers have never seen before.

The iconic series from writer Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard - which was originally printed in black and white - will be re-released from issue one beginning this October, with vibrant colors added to the pages courtesy of Dave McCaig. And fans will have more to look forward to than just a new aesthetic. Each Deluxe Edition issue will also feature a section called "The Cutting Room Floor," where readers will be treated to Kirkman's handwritten notes on the series' plots, as well as his commentary on potential story arcs that never made it to the page and how they could have majorly impacted the zombie-infested world of TWD.

Additionally, each issue will also have new variant covers from artists including David Finch, Tony Moore, Julian Totino Tedesco, and Arthur Adams that will highlight the introductions of important characters and plot points throughout the series' 17-year run of 193 issues. The announcement from Image made it clear that there are no plans to compile the colored issues into trade paperbacks anytime in the near future, so readers may need to break out their longboxes if they plan to keep up with the remastered series. The first issue is set to hit stores October 7 and will have five different covers for readers to choose from. There will then be two issues released every following month.

Besides the books being a smash hit in their own right, they went on to be the basis for not one, but two wildly popular shows on AMC. This colorization is actually an interesting reversal to what AMC did just a few years ago, when they ran a marathon of the first season of The Walking Dead in black and white as a tribute to its source material. The main show is now in its 10th season, but had to delay its finale due to the coronavirus pandemic, though showrunner Angela Kang said that the finale's air date will be announced shortly during a Comic-Con@Home panel. The original show's spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead, was renewed months ago for a sixth season.

And if this new take on the series isn't enough to quench readers' bloodlust, earlier month Kirkman and Adlard reunited for the all new one-shot Negan Lives, which followed up on the character after his final appearance in the pages of The Walking Dead #174. So not only do devoted fans of the series have cause for excitement to see their favorite characters in a whole new light, this is also a perfect time for devoted fans of the show who have never read the comics to hop on board from the story's gruesome beginning. Let's just hope McCaig has plenty of red ink at the ready.
