The Umbrella Academy: 5 Times We Felt Bad For Vanya (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Vanya Hargreeves grew up as the only ordinary sibling among a family of world-famous child superheroes. As the first season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy progresses, Vanya, now an adult, discovers the hidden powers she’s had her entire life, and everything she knows about herself changes.

Vanya’s storyline gets complicated when she unleashes her powerful abilities that are tied to her emotions. Some light is shed on the circumstances of her childhood, and there are plenty of moments to sympathize with Vanya because of what she has endured. That being said, Vanya’s naivete and impulsiveness have made her unlikable to some fans.

10 Felt Bad: Being Locked Back In The Vault

When Pogo confirms that Vanya has powers of her own, Luther confines her in a vault to keep her away from the rest of the family. This same vault was where Reginald Hargreeves kept young Vanya while he was figuring out how to sedate her uncontrollable powers.

Vanya wants to explain her newfound powers to her siblings but isn’t given the chance. She remembers what it was like to be isolated within the walls of the vault and goes into a panic.

9 Hated: Destroying The Academy

Vanya’s first move before wreaking havoc on the town and beginning the apocalypse is destroying The Umbrella Academy. We see flashbacks of her childhood and memories that make her angry as she walks down the hallways of the Academy, blowing up her siblings’ bedrooms.

Although there are bad memories tied to the Academy, her siblings were starting to work as a team again and use their childhood home as a home base. Vanya’s destruction of the Academy also resulted in Grace’s death when the building collapsed.

8 Felt Bad: The Way She Is Treated At Orchestra Rehearsals

Learning how to play the violin is a skill Vanya began to pursue s a child. By the time she reunites with her siblings after their father’s death, she is the third chair violinist in a local orchestra.

When Vanya apologizes for being late to practice, the conductor says he didn’t notice her absence. Later, Vanya compliments first chair violinist, Helen, who asks how long Vanya’s been stuck as third chair and tells her she doesn’t have enough talent to keep playing.

7 Hated: Completely Trusting Leonard

Vanya views Leonard as the only person who loves her for who she is, so it stands to reason that she would be skeptical when Allison says something is wrong with him. Vanya doesn’t take Allison’s advice because she trusts her own judgment, but her full trust in a man she has only just met can be frustrating for fans to watch.

Vanya is naive to Leonard’s red flags, including inviting himself into her apartment and his annoyance when she would rather practice violin instead of her powers.

6 Felt Bad: Discovering That Leonard Was Manipulating Her

Though Allison tried to warn her, Vanya’s realization of what Leonard had done to her was a lot to take in. He used her father’s research to find a way into her life and pretended to discover her powers with her as a team. He also killed the first chair violinist and pushed Vanya to the point of killing two men with her powers.

Vanya felt loved for the first time in her life and, in one moment, it ended when she learned that it was all an act.

5 Hated: Blaming Allison For What Happened To Her As A Child

Vanya reveals to Allison that she has powers that were being hidden from her. Allison pieces together the story and comes to the realization that she was an unsuspecting accomplice in suppressing Vanya’s abilities.

Hargreeves forced her to use her power to convince Vanya that she was ordinary. Vanya lashes out at Allison and blames her for the terrible things that happened to her as a child, which is unfair since Allison was forced to make up the rumor when she was four and didn’t understand why.

4 Felt Bad: Being Scared Of Her Abilities

After the outburst of her powers outside a restaurant where she had dinner with Leonard, Vanya becomes scared of the abilities she didn’t know she had. A wave of energy escaped from her body, killing two men and injuring another.

Vanya didn’t mean to harm anyone and is disturbed by the fact that she has the ability to cause such harm. She is alarmed that she has a power she can’t control and struggles with the idea of having one in the first place.

3 Hated: Slitting Allison’s Throat

Vanya and Allison get into a heated fight after Allison reveals that Hargreeves made her use her power on Vanya. Vanya gradually becomes more aggressive and Allison is about to reluctantly use her power on her sister again when Vanya reaches her tipping point and slits Allison’s throat with her violin bow.

Allison is losing lots of blood as Leonard pries Vanya away and the audience is left to believe that one of the main characters is dead. Miraculously, Allison’s carotid artery hasn’t been cut and she survives the incident.

2 Felt Bad: Her Childhood

Vanya spent her childhood years isolated and forgotten. Since she supposedly had no powers, she was left out of The Umbrella Academy and got a fragment of the attention her siblings did. Hargreeves separated her from the rest of the group, making it difficult for her to have good relationships with her brothers and sister.

Vanya’s isolation as a child affected her deeply and inspired her to write a book on the Hargreeves, which wasn’t well-received by the family. Vanya’s emotional trauma continues to affect her personality and the relationships she has as an adult.

1 Hated: The Apocalypse

Once Five returns to 2019 and sees that the newspaper headline he found in the apocalypse hasn’t changed, the realizes that the apocalypse is still going to happen and Vanya is the cause. The bottled-up anger Vanya has after discovering her suppressed powers, learning about Leonard’s manipulation of her, and being locked away in the vault is unleashed.

Her violin concert becomes the epicenter of the apocalypse. A ray of energy shoots from her chest and strikes the moon, causing the total destruction of Earth.
