By the ninth season of any TV show, series either call it quits (case in point, Seinfeld) or start to dip in quality, bobsledding towards mediocrity for a few more seasons. But The Simpsons’ ninth season was 23 years ago as of this writing, and the show hasn’t slowed down one bit. It wasn’t lagging in quality then and for many fans, it still hasn’t.
The ninth season won a slew of awards and the family visited New York, Skinner wound up being an imposter (but Springfield was fine with it), and Lisa wrestles with her skepticism and her faith. Here are the 10 best episodes of season nine, ranked according to IMDB.
10 Lisa The Skeptic - 8.1
As the new mall is about to open, what seems to be the remains of an angel are unearthed. Lisa is very skeptical that it’s really an angel and tries to convince her mother that it's not real. Despite her best efforts, Marge and the rest of Springfield believe that they're looking at the remains of a heavenly deity.
Lisa maintains her doubt but when the bones rise up, she grabs onto Marge in fear. Not surprisingly, it was a all a publicity stunt. The episode ends with Marge letting her daughter know that despite her skepticism, she still reached for momma’s hand. Cartoons are allowed to have heart strings pulled on, too.
9 Lisa’s Sax - 8.1
After Bart accidentally destroys Lisa’s saxophone, she’s completely grief stricken and can’t remember ever not having her beloved sax.
Cue a Simpsons flashback episode featuring Homer the doting and loving father having to forgo buying an air conditioner to buy his gifted daughter a sax to help with her development. After regaling the kids with a story, Marge lets Homer know there’s still money in their AC account. Needless to say, all's well that ends well.
8 Treehouse Of Horror VIII - 8.2
Blood curdling and spine tingling cartoon lunacy? Thy name is The Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror specials.
The eighth installment featured “The Homega Man,” where Homer winds up being the last man on Earth. Bart heads into a matter transporter with a fly on his arm and gets switched in “Fly Vs. Fly.” Lastly, Marge and her sisters are put on trial, suspected of being witches in “Easy Bake Coven.”
7 The Cartridge Family - 8.2
The family and the series tackle the issue of gun control in “The Cartridge Family,” because Maggie shooting Burns didn’t do anything. Anyway, this is the episode where Homer gets a gun to protect his family.
But between him being careless and Bart finding the gun, Marge takes the kids and leaves. The NRA even kicks him out for being careless. He heads to the hotel to tell Marge he got rid of the gun - even though he really didn’t. But it’s also guns that save the family when Snake arrives to rob them.
6 King Of The Hill - 8.2
No, the episode doesn’t have anything to do with Mike Judge’s King Of The Hill. Instead, after Bart ridicules him for being overweight, Homer meets Rainer Wolfcastle, who helps Homer get in shape.
Now that he is in shape, he volunteers to climb a mountain that even Rainer wouldn’t climb. The mountain proves too treacherous and Homer can’t make it to the top. Despite this, Bart’s proud of him.
5 Das Bus - 8.2
It’s Lord Of The Flies, Simpsons-style when the kids’ elementary school bus drives off of a cliff. Otto tries to swim for help but he’s caught by Chinese fisherman and they plan on using him for slave labor.
Bart tries to convince everyone that they could luxurious lives, but has to defend Milhouse after he is suspected of eating all of the rations. They eventually discover the true culprit was a wild boar. The group was eventually saved by some guy named Moe.
4 Simpson Tide - 8.2
After again causing a nuclear meltdown, Homer is fired from the plant. He winds up enlisting in the Navy instead. Before he leaves, he also takes Bart’s new earring, annoyed that he got his ear pierced.
After accidentally declaring war on Russia, it’s revealed that the USSR never disbanded. When Homer’s sub is fired on, he saves the boat and the crew with the earring.
3 The Joy Of Sect - 8.3
Movementarianism has come to Springfield and Homer gets recruited in it. It turns out he’s joined a cult and Homer moves the family to the compound. Marge resists the brainwashing and escapes to get help from Reverend Lovejoy and Ned Flanders.
She eventually is able to save the family who are happy to be thinking for themselves again... until they’re comically brainwashed by their parent company, Fox, to close the show.
2 Trash Of The Titans - 8.4
U2 guest stars to beat the heck out of Homer after he interrupted their Pop Mart tour. He was trying to launch his campaign to become the next Springfield Sanitation Commissioner, but then U2 just had to beat him up. However, this helps Homer come up with a slogan “Can’t Somebody Else Do It?,” pushing him to electoral victory.
After wasting all of the department’s money, Homer convinces the rest of the country to pay Springfield to store their trash. When that situation went critical, Mayor Quimby pushed the town five miles down the road.
1 The City Of New York Vs. Homer Simpson - 9.1
In this episode, Barney borrowed the family’s car and on a bender, winds up parking the car in Manhattan in the shadows of the World Trade Center. Despite hating the city and not wanting to go back, the family persuade Homer to make it a family trip.
Marge and the kids go sightseeing while Homer and disdain for the city is on hand and he tries to find a bathroom to use within the old WTC. He goes through all sorts of tribulations to get the car back, but the rest of the family had a great time.
