Bollywood: Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Russell Couldn't Get Star-Lord's Name Right

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn revealed that Kurt Russell couldn’t get Star-Lord's name right during a scene in the Marvel sequel. Despite being a relatively unknown Marvel story, Gunn’s band of “a-holes,” known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, joined the MCU in 2014, and their film became in an instant hit with fans. The unique characters coming together, the humor, and the now-classic mix-tape songs made the film a smashing success. For the Guardians sequel, Gunn brought in even bigger names with the likes of Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone joining the cast.

Russell plays a prominent part in Vol. 2, as he portrays Peter Quill's (Chris Pratt) father, Ego the planet, a celestial being. The film’s story largely revolves around Peter’s relationship with his biological father and learning more and more about his past, which ultimately leads to Peter discovering that Ego planted the tumor inside of his mother. However, Peter first meets his father on a nearby planet after Ego helps the Guardians when they are being attacked by the Sovereigns. Ego and Mantis later sit-down with the Guardians by a camp fire and talk. Yesterday, in a watch along of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where director Gunn shared some interesting Easter eggs, he also gave an insight into this scene, sharing Russell’s real-life struggles with the name Star-Lord.

While tweeting during the #QuarantineWatchParty, during the scene where Ego and Mantis sit down with the Guardians, Gunn tweeted that “Kurt Russell kept calling @prattprattpratt “Star Wars” instead of Star Lord in this scene. He couldn’t get it out of his head!” Below his tweet, Pom Klementieff (Mantis) even writes about the fact it was so “hard not to laugh” due to Russell’s mistake.

Funnily enough, this amusing Russell error did come to light in 2017, as it was part of a bonus feature for the film’s home video release. However, getting the insight from Gunn, and Klementieff does make the story of Russell constantly saying “Star Wars” instead of Star-Lord even more amusing, as we get to hear about it from those that were there. There was also once a joke that due to Russell auditioning for Han Solo in the ‘70s, he still had that thought in his mind all these years later. Perhaps that’s what Gunn was also referring to when he said, “He couldn’t get it out of his head!”

As the worldwide quarantine puts a hold on the industry and delays productions, revisiting past MCU projects has been the thing to do for MCU directors and fans. However, according to the Guardians director, Vol. 3 is still on track, despite not being given a release date. The last scheduled Marvel release is currently Captain Marvel 2 for July 8, 2022. Vol. 3 will likely come in 2023 or 2024. But even with the long wait, the director has teased fans with details like Rocket being a bigger part of the third installment, and the fact that there will be another death in the next film. For now, though, fans can continue to revisit the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to continue getting their fix of Marvel films.
