The scheme vows to honour safe drivers by removing a demerit point annually if they keep their driving record clean. As a result, any motorist who copped a low-range speeding fine and one demerit point last year could have that demerit point wiped at the conclusion of 2023 if they stay out of trouble on the road. The current law only allows this to take place after three years. The policy aims to recompense road users for driving safely in an attempt to decelerate the road toll. COALITIONIf re-elected, Premier Dominic Perrottet will let drivers escape low-level offences including low-range speeding, driving in a bus lane or disobeying a no left or right turn sign if they keep their records clean for three years. It aims to reward safe drivers by providing hip pocket relief if they’re spotted driving slightly over the speed limit, caught in a bus lane or if they fail to give way. However, drivers will only be eligible to have one fine waived every three years and any offence linked with demerit points will still stand. Their policy is designed to motivate motorists to drive more carefully by providing penalty relief.
