At Least 20 Killed in Violent Protests Against UN Peacekeepers in DRC

At least 20 people have been killed during violent protests against United Nations peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between July 25 and 27, according to a Congolese official and local media. The provincial deputy and vice president of the Provincial Assembly of North Kivu, Jean-Paul Lumbulumbu, said on July 26 that 20 people had died in the protests and at least 50 were injured. Local media reported that an additional four people died by electrocution during a demonstration at a MONUSCO site in Kavimvira on the morning of July 27. According to local media, governor Theo Ngwabidje Kasi said a stray bullet hit a medium-voltage cable. The UN issued a statement condemning the protests and confirming that two UN police officers and one Blue Helmet have been killed during the protests.
