WA police searching for alleged rapist

Western Australian police have been ramping up their hunt for a person who raped a tourist on Broome's Cable Beach.

Police say the 31-year-old woman was violently raped in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"The victim has gone behind sand dunes to go to the toilet and that's when the suspect has struck," Detective Senior Sergeant Brian Beck said.

Western Australian police say the woman was allegedly raped at Cable Beach in Broome.

"The act itself was horrendous, she was seriously assaulted and obviously sexually assaulted as well."

Police say she was repeatedly struck to the head, most likely with a blunt object such as a rock.

She sustained wounds from behind her ear all the way around to the front of her face, police said.

The woman, crying for help, managed to walk to beach party organisers.

She was rushed to hospital and has since been discharged and is at home.

Police say the man they are looking for is dark skinned with a slim build and is about 177cm tall.

But authorities emphasised that since it was dark at the time of the attack they're open to potential suspects who don't match the current description they have.

While police are talking to several people of interest, they say they are concerned party-goers may be afraid to come forward with information because of potential illicit drug use at the event.

"There was between 100 and 200 people at the event. We encourage all those people to come forward. That's crucial," Beck said.
