White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has addressed the US government's recently announced decision to undertake a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics over human rights issues. Under the move, American athletes could still compete, but the government will not send any representatives. "The athletes from Team USA have our full support - we will be behind them 100 per cent as we cheer them on from home," Ms Psaki said at a media conference. "But we will not be contributing to the fanfare of the Games - US diplomatic, or official representation would treat these Games as business as usual in the face of the PRC's egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang, and we simply can't do that." A diplomatic boycott increases public pressure on China to reform its policies before the world's eyes fall upon it.
