Where Is Kingstown? Mayor of Kingstown Filming Locations & Inspiration

Warning: Major SPOILERS for Mayor of Kingstown episodes 1 and 2.

Mayor of Kingstown filming locations project a grim picture of a fictional town and, while Kingstown, Michigan is not real, a real place served as inspiration for the series. With creator Taylor Sheridan (writer of Yellowstone, Wind River, Hell or High Water, and Sicario) and legendary producer Antoine Fuqua (The Guilty, Southpaw, and The Magnificent Seven) at the helm, Mayor of Kingstown looks poised to join Yellowstone as one of Paramount+ hit crime-series. Making for a hot debut, the streamer released not one, but two episodes this past Sunday for viewers to whet their appetites and the reviews are excellent.

Mayor of Kingstown tells the story of the McLusky brothers, who work as power brokers in the town of Kingstown, Michigan, a city with seven prisons within a 10-mile radius. The eldest brother, Mitch (played by Bloodline’s Kyle Chandler) acts as the town’s current “mayor,” orchestrating deals between the lawful and the unlawful in the town to keep the peace. When Mitch is murdered by a low-level criminal, middle brother Mike (played by Hawkeye’s Jeremy Renner) must decide whether to take over the role as “mayor,” or finally leave town for good.

Though it seems unbelievable to think of having a town comprised of prisons, Hugh Dillon, one of the show’s creators and stars, grew up in the real Kingstown: Kingston, Ontario. He and fellow creator Taylor Sheridan formed the idea for Mayor of Kingstown a decade ago, when they were both struggling actors. Accordingly, Mayor of Kingstown filming locations canvas several areas throughout Ontario, Canada and include the real Kingstown— Kingston—offering an incredible amount of authenticity within the series’ fictional Michigan setting.

Like the Kingstown from Mayor of Kingstown, Kingston, Ontario is a town of prisons. Originally founded in 1787 as “King’s Town,” the name was shortened to “Kingston” in 1788 and became the prison capital of Canada and home to a record of 10 prisons at one time. Kingston Penitentiary (also seen in Star Trek Discovery and DC’s Titans) is one of Kingston’s oldest prisons and is one of the most important Mayor of Kingstown filming locations. Interestingly, Kingston Penitentiary is also where the real-life Grace Marks served her life sentence in Alias Grace and was used as a filming location in the series.

Other Mayor of Kingstown filming locations include several locations around the nearby towns of Hamilton and Brantford, as well as Toronto. The McLusky brothers’ office is located on Queenston Road in Hamilton and Mike and Mitch meet on Hamilton Beach in Mayor of Kingstown episode 1. Lakeview Restaurant on Dundas Street in Toronto became Mayor of Kingstown’s Red Carriage diner, where Jeremy Renner’s character is seen meeting with the several prison guards, and the yard of drug-king “Bunny” from Mayor of Kingstown was filmed in nearby Etobicoke. The McLusky family home was filmed in Brantford, Ontario along with the weapons shop where Jeremy Renner’s Mike acquires supplies for the bear.
