The NT News understands the child was around five years old and had been “unwell for some time” when he died while family members were transporting him from a remote community north of Alice Springs.Detective Acting Superintendent Megan Blackwell said police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.“It is believed the child suffered a sickness and died while family attempted to transport him into town,” she said.“A report will be prepared for the Coroner.“In respect to the family and community involved, no further information will be provided at this stage.”A spokesman for St John confirmed ambulance crew members met with the family part way between the remote community and Alice Springs on November 1.Minister for Territory Families and Urban Housing Kate Worden confirmed the department was also investigating the matter.“Our thoughts are with the family at this time,” she said.“Northern Territory Police are investigating this matter, with Territory Families, Housing and Communities assisting as required.”The NT News further understands the child was not under the care of Territory Families.A source familiar with the matter, who cannot be named as not to identify the community, said the death happened in the early hours of the morning while the family members were travelling.“The child had been unwell for some time and they were travelling between communities,” he said. “It just happened to occur – the child happened to pass on their way back from somewhere in the early hours of the morning. The child eventually succumbed to whatever the illness was.”The source said the local childcare centre in the community was closed for a day or two to allow staff members impacted to carry out sorry business. The NT News understands that a report will be handed to the Coroner imminently.
