Marvel's Avengers' Spider-Man Briefly Spotted In-Game

One eagle-eyed Marvel’s Avengers fan caught a brief glimpse of the game’s version of Spider-Man during this week’s Avengers DLC roadmap presentation. The iconic web-slinger will be making his long-awaited debut in Marvel’s Avengers as a PlayStation exclusive DLC character on November 30, with developer Crystal Dynamics promising a full story event titled With Great Power. This event will feature a series of challenges that detail how Spider-Man met and came to cooperate with the Avengers in their ongoing battle against AIM.

Spider-Man has always seen plenty of love from video game developers in the form of classic titles like Spider-Man for the original PlayStation and 2004’s Spider-Man 2 tie-in game, but the past few years have been especially good to the hero thanks to the success of Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series. Marvel’s Avengers will feature a different Spidey than the one depicted in Marvel’s Spider-Man, though, with the exact details of his appearance or story within the super-hero live-service title remaining under a veil of secrecy as Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics prepare for his arrival later this month.

According to The Gamer, a brief glimpse of Spider-Man was featured in this week’s Marvel’s Avengers developer’s stream. Twitter user carlos_esconde posted a screenshot of the Marvel’s Avengers version of Spider-Man a few days ago, though the web-slinger was mostly obscured by a UI message detailing the resource and economy changes coming as part of November's wave of Marvel’s Avengers updates. However, Spidey’s classic red mask and boots can be seen, and carlos_esconde also spotted a nameplate featuring artwork from Marvel cover artist J. Scott Campbell.

Despite featuring a star-studded roster of Marvel heroes that has continued to grow over the past few months with new additions like Hawkeye and Black Panther, Marvel’s Avengers has struggled to match the success of modern superhero titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man and the Batman: Arkham series. Square Enix reported a net loss when the game launched last year, and even President Yosuke Matsuda admits that Marvel’s Avengers has been a disappointment in terms of sales and critical response. The biggest issue many players have with Marvel’s Avengers is the game’s heavy reliance on microtransactions, with fans accusing Crystal Dynamics of implementing a play-to-win system despite previous promises that Marvel’s Avengers' microtransactions would be purely cosmetic. These elements were recently removed from Marvel’s Avengers following growing backlash from players, but some feel that the damage may already be done for the long-troubled superhero title.

Spider-Man isn't shown completely in carlos_esconde’s posted Marvel’s Avengers image, but it looks like Crystal Dynamics is sticking pretty close to the classic red-and-blue Spidey outfit for its take on the classic hero. Only time will tell if players will return to Marvel’s Avengers for the chance to play as Spider-Man, especially seeing how PlayStation fans already have Insomniac’s excellent Spider-Man series to fill that need. However, Square Enix is banking on Marvel’s most famous hero to try and rescue Marvel’s Avengers from its admittedly shaken reputation when the With Great Power event launches at the end of this month.
