Marvel Agrees: Mystique is The World's Next Major Threat

Warning: contains preview pages for Dark Ages #3!

In Marvel's Dark Ages, an ancient evil buried in the Earth for billions of years escapes and unleashes an electromagnetic pulse that disrupts Earth’s technology. In the wake of this devastation, Earth rebuilds, creating a paradise from the ashes of society, but now Mystique threatens to undermine it all in a preview for Dark Ages #3, on sale November 17 in print and digital.

Dark Ages is set outside of the mainstream Marvel Universe. In the first issue, an ancient being called the Unmaker awakens, and attacks Earth. During the course of the battle, several heroes, including the Scarlet Witch, are killed. Also during the battle, an electromagnetic pulse is unleashed, rendering all technology useless. Society begins to break down as competition for resources rages on. In the midst of this chaos, Jean Grey and Earth’s psychics help calm the populace, showing them a better way. Over the next few years, Earth experiences a remarkable turnaround, rebuilding society in a new and better way. In addition, without devices such as cars, the environmental damage done to the planet has begun repairing itself; Earth is now a literal and figurative paradise. But every paradise has a snake, and this one’s name is Mystique, and she makes her move in a preview for Dark Ages #3, written by Tom Taylor, with art by Iban Coello, colors by Brian Reber and letters by Joe Sabino.

The preview opens with a birthday party for Spider-Man’s daughter May; Luke Cage and Johnny Storm are also in attendance. They are joined by Jessica Jones, who appears distressed; Spider-Man and Cage pick up on it. Readers then learn what has happened: Tony Stark has disappeared, seemingly kidnapped by Steve Rogers. Blade, Honey Badger and Wolverine are investigating, and Badger and Wolverine, thanks to their heightened sense of smell, immediately discern it was not Steve Rogers who abducted Tony—it was Mystique.

The preview ends there, leaving readers wondering why Mystique is after Tony Stark. In the previous issue, Tony was pressed into service by Apocalypse—does Mystique’s actions have something to do with Apocalypse? Regardless, Tony is one of the architects of the new world order that has arisen in the wake of the Unmaker’s attack and if he helps bring the Unmaker back, it could spell doom for all they have created. It is possible that Mystique has her own agenda for Tony Stark, but only time will tell. This is not the only place Mystique is making waves; in the mainline Marvel Universe, she has brought about the resurrection of her deceased lover Destiny, which threatens to throw Krakoa and Earth’s mutant population into ruin.

Due to her shape-shifting powers, Mystique can impersonate anyone. This, coupled with her mercenary attitude, gives her the ability to cause serious damage. She has thrown a monkey wrench into the mutant homeland of Krakoa and now she has done the same for the paradise Earth’s heroes have created in a preview for Dark Ages #3.
