Man sentenced over 12 counts of rape against former partner

The man, who cannot be named so as not to identify his victim, appeared at the Alice Springs Supreme Court on Monday, where he was ­sentenced over 12 counts of rape and three counts of aggravated assault against his former partner. The court heard the man and his partner were high school sweethearts but he became “extremely controlling, demanding and abusive”.The court heard that between 2017 and 2018, the man locked his partner out of the house overnight on several ­occasions when she said she had nowhere to go. On another occasion, the court heard he pointed a shotgun at her head and body, and proceeded to rape her while telling her that she was “being punished” for not bringing enough money into the home. In another episode, the court heard the man smashed his partner’s head against a kitchen panel and then brought her into the bedroom, where he used a cattle prod to shock her for about 45 seconds. In her victim statement, the man’s former partner said the relationship had left an enduring scar on her life. “During the 12 or 13 years of constant ­intimidation, control and abuse, I was left feeling hollow, worthless and violated,” she said. “How could anyone treat a person like that, especially someone you love and care for and originally thought felt the same way? “I lost all my human rights, could not make my own decisions and had no control over my own mind and body. I basically had to say and put up with it hoping that one day the nightmare would end. “I frequently cried myself to sleep, I constantly had nightmares that he was attacking me, waking up in terror. I’m so scared when I hear a noise at night, my GP has prescribed me medication to help me sleep. “I have seen various counsellors over the last three years to help me deal with trauma.”The court heard the man showed no remorse for his crimes.In sentencing, Acting Justice Dean Mildren described the man’s crimes as “really ­serious offences”.“I need to impose a significant sentence of imprisonment on you to show not only you but others who might be minded to behave in a similar manner that offending of this kind will not be tolerated by the courts,” he said. The man was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, but could get parole after 12 years.
