The Vampire Diaries: 10 Worst Things That Happened To Elena

Nobody's ever really safe in a town full of supernatural creatures like Mystic Falls. While all the characters of The Vampire Diaries saw their fair share of vampire, werewolf, and magic-induced trauma, no one suffered quite as much as the show's main protagonist, Elena Gilbert.

Despite being a teenager for the majority of the show's run, Elena experiences more loss than most people do in a lifetime. Her resilience is one of her greatest strengths — without it, she could never have remained so kind and compassionate in the face of that many dramatic revelations and events.

10 Elena Finds Out She's Adopted

In the grand scheme of things, being adopted is the most regular part of Elena's life. However, it's the nature of her discovery that makes it so painful. With her parents already dead, she's unable to get a proper explanation from those involved when Stefan reveals the news and upends everything she thought she knew.

It doesn't even stop there. Elena's real parents are revealed to be the man she thought was her uncle and a vampire — a vampire who was previously married to her teacher and was turned by her then-boyfriend's brother — which adds extra layers of complication to her already complex life.

9 John's Death

Elena's relationship with John is complicated, to say the least. Having grown up thinking of him as her uncle (and never really liking him), she discovers that he is actually her biological father and arranged for Isobel, her mother, to give an infant Elena to his brother and his wife.

Elena and John never get much positive quality time together, but that doesn't mean she isn't affected by his death. The pair are on the verge of amending their relationship when John sacrifices his life to save Elena during the Sacrifice. With his death, Elena finally realizes how much he loved her — and loses the last parent she has left.

8 Elena Becomes A Vampire

From the moment Elena meets Stefan in the pilot, it seems inevitable that she'll become a vampire one day. Even so, it comes as a shock when her car is driven off Wickery Bridge for a second time and she dies, ending her human life and starting her new one as a vampire.

This is traumatic for anyone, but especially someone who previously made it clear that she wants to be nothing but human. Although some fans argue that vampire life changes Elena for the better, she struggles with the moral implications of vampirism. Thankfully, the Cure later manages to restore Elena's mortality, and she eventually gets her human happily ever after.

7 Bonnie's Death

Elena and Bonnie love each other like sisters, and the latter is always there for Elena — whether that's for magical or friendship purposes. So when Bonnie sacrifices herself to bring Jeremy back to life in season 4's "Graduation," Elena loses her biggest confidante since childhood.

What makes these even more tragic is the fact Elena doesn't even know straight away. It's only after a summer of Jeremy keeping her secret that he decides to finally spill, leaving Elena devastated that she never figured out the truth. Thankfully, Bonnie does make her way back — even if she does later die and return yet again.

6 Kai's Sleeping Curse

Considering Kai is one of The Vampire Diaries' most evil villains, he still manages to pull off a shocking feat in the season 6 finale when he puts Elena into a sleeping curse that can only be broken by Bonnie's death.

Bonnie does manage to break the curse years later, but the experience is still heavy for everyone involved — especially Elena. Not only is she separated from her friends and Damon — just as she'd taken the Cure for them to begin a human life together — but she is put into a coma thinking she'll never get to see her best friend or mortal loved ones ever again.

5 Jenna's Death

After Elena and Jeremy lose their parents, their primary caregiver comes in the form of their mother's sister, Aunt Jenna. While she's barely an adult herself, Jenna works hard to look after her teenage niece and nephew and is horrified to discover the supernatural world in which they've become entangled behind her back.

This only makes her sudden subsequent passing all the more painful. Jenna's death isn't an accident but rather a byproduct of Klaus' efforts to break the Sun and Moon Curse, for which he needs Elena. It just adds to the guilt Elena already carries for her parents' death, and makes her Jeremy's sole guardian at just 17 years old.

4 Damon's Death

Somehow, Elena makes it through all of her friends' deaths. But when her boyfriend dies at the end of season 5, it completely rocks her world. Even though Bonnie also dies at the same time, it's the grief over Damon from which she just can't recover — so she gets Alaric to compel all positive memories of him from her mind.

This is one of the biggest mistakes Elena makes in The Vampire Diaries, and her friends are horrified by her choice. However, this is the only way she can see herself navigating a Damon-free life,  proving just how much she loves the eldest Salvatore brother.

3 The Car Accident On Wickery Bridge

For Elena, everything comes back to Wickery Bridge. Driving out to pick Elena up from a party, poor road conditions force Miranda and Grayson Gilbert's car off the road and into the river, where both lose their life and Elena only narrowly survives.

Losing her parents at such a young age was always going to have a toll on Elena's life. When viewers are first introduced to her in season 1, she is a shadow of her former fun, sociable self. With all the supernatural occurrences that happen in the wake of their death — not to mention the fact she only discovers she's adopted once they're gone — Elena is forced to bear a lot of responsibility from a young age.

2 Jeremy's Death

Elena's strength in the face of so much loss truly is a gift. However, Jeremy has one of The Vampire Diaries' most heartbreaking deaths and it definitely tests her the most, with Elena seriously struggling to cope in the aftermath.

Insistent that he'll be reincarnated by the Gilbert family ring as usual, Elena completely breaks down when she realizes Jeremy's status as a hunter means it won't work. Despite all the death she experiences in The Vampire Diaries, this is the first viewers see Elena truly destroyed by her grief. Her pain is so severe, she has to turn off her humanity — which, for someone as kind and compassionate as her, is a big deal.

1 Being A Doppelgänger

It sounds minor in comparison to everything else, but being a descendant of Katherine Pierce — and therefore a doppelgänger — is the reason for pretty much all the trauma in Elena's life.

If this wasn't the case, the Salvatore brothers would probably never have stuck around in Mystic Falls; Elena may not have had the "epic" love she always wanted, but the likes of Klaus, Kai, and Silas also wouldn't have killed her friends and family and put her through so much pain. That's a small price to pay for a life free of murder, torture, and grief.
