If a notable industry insider is to be believed, the classic PlayStation series Sly Cooper could be returning soon. Developed by Sucker Punch of Infamous and Ghost Of Tsushima fame, the original Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2002 and featured the titular raccoon thief and his lovable band of partners-in-crime as they engaged in zany capers amid a colorful, anthropomorphic world and solid platforming gameplay.
Despite initially being overshadowed by fellow PlayStation platformers like Jak And Daxter and Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper would go on to spawn two Sucker Punch-developed sequels and earn a place alongside the other two in a trinity of PlayStation-exclusive, kid-friendly franchises. Sly himself would even make guest appearances in crossover titles like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and PlayStation Move Heroes. However, the Sly Cooper series would go on a lengthy hiatus after the release of 2013’s Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, a PS3 sequel developed by Sanzaru Games. Despite Thieves in Time featuring a hidden cliffhanger ending that teased further adventures for Sly, the most fans have gotten since then was a spin-off title featuring Sly’s tech genius sidekick Bentley the Turtle and a remastered collection of the first three Sly Cooper games on the PS3.
These fans might not have to wait much longer for a brand-new Sly Cooper game if a recent tweet by Xbox Era’s Nick Baker is anything to go by. Recently, Baker posted that his usual Sony source revealed to him that a new Sly Cooper title is in the works. He gave no further details on when this new Sly Cooper game could be announced or released, but it is worth mentioning that he has previously shared rumors of a new Infamous game and a Ghost Of Tsushima mini-sequel, both being major Sucker Punch-developed franchises.
Rumors of a new Sly Cooper game have been circulating as far back as August, with Nick Baker himself suggesting that a developer other than Sucker Punch could be taking the reins for this hypothetical new installment. This would make sense given that Sucker Punch has been busy with both the Infamous series and Ghost Of Tsushima in the years since 2005’s Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, although the developer did pay homage to the franchise that put it on the map with a Sly Cooper-themed set of armor in Ghost Of Tsushima.
Fans have been speculating that with the Jak and Daxter games being re-released on the PS4 in 2017 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart topping sales charts on the PS5 earlier this year, Sony might be getting ready to bring back its third mascot-based PlayStation-exclusive platforming series with a brand-new Sly Cooper game. Given that the lovable raccoon rogue hasn’t had a new interactive adventure in eight years, said players will certainly be looking forward to Sly’s impeding return should Nick Baker’s information prove accurate.
