Shadow & Bone Season 2 Begins Filming Soon, Says Ben Barnes

Shadow and Bone season 2 to commence filming soon, reveals star Ben Barnes. The Netflix show released season 1 in April, 2021 to widespread acclaim, and season 2 was confirmed not long after. The show adapts two series of YA fantasy novels by author Leigh Bardugo, both set in the same storyworld and known collectively as the Grishaverse: the trilogy beginning with 2012's Shadow and Bone; and the duology that starts with 2015's Six of Crows. The story follows a teenaged orphan named Alina Starkov, who discovers a power that makes her possibly the only one who could save her world from a dark force called the Shadow Fold. But to live up to that potential, she must contend with other characters attempting to capture or kill her, as well as try to track down and save her childhood best friend, Mal.

The books received widespread critical acclaim, and the TV series has also fared very well, with Netflix announcing that 55 million households watched Shadow and Bone in the first 28 days of its release. The show stars Barnes as the villainous Darkling, Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov, Archie Renaux as Mal, and Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker. It was developed for Netflix by Eric Heisserer, a longtime screenwriter best known for his Academy Award-nominated work on Arrival.

Little is known about Shadow and Bone season 2 beyond confirmation that more episodes are on their way, but based on recent comments from Barnes, it's clear that filming should begin soon. Deadline reports that the Londoner has been celebrating his 40th birthday and looking to the future of his career. "I’ve been working on Guillermo del Toro’s Horror anthology, Cabinet of Curiosities," Barnes says, and I’m going back to season two of Shadow and Bone.

The English actor's comments give no suggestion of when filming might take place, and the rest of the interview suggests music is the priority in his life right now. Barnes rose to prominence as the titular character in the 2008 movie The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and has also played a prominent role in Westworld, appearing in all three seasons of HBO's hit science-fiction thriller series. However, the actor is no stranger to music either, having recorded songs for soundtracks of movies he's appeared in since 2008.

Anybody who has read the Grishaverse novels probably has a pretty good idea of what to expect in Shadow and Bone season 2, but this doesn't mean the showrunners won't diverge from the source material. Bardugo's story is epic in scope, and it would be difficult to convey every strand of it effectively in a show, particularly since the series is adapting multiple novels at once. Shadow and Bone season 2 will no doubt be among the most highly anticipated Netflix releases, and though Barnes gives no hint as to when filming will start, fans are keeping their fingers crossed for a 2022 release date.
