Tensions had been simmering between the Bangladeshi batters and Sri Lankan paceman Lahiru Kumara. After Naim blocked a ball back down the pitch to Kumara, the fiery quick picked it up and threw it hard towards Naim in an apparent attempt to hit his stumps and run him out while he was out of his crease. But the ball went nowhere near the stumps and flew very close to Naim’s head, with the opener forced to swerve out of the way so he wasn’t hit. Then when Kumara was bowling again two overs later, he dismissed Das, who was caught at mid off for 16. Kumara immediately made a beeline for Das and the pair exchanged words in an extremely tense exchange with their faces only centimetres apart. The confrontation lasted about 10 seconds and Das pointed his bat at Kumara in an accusatory manner, before the two players were separated by their teammates and the umpire as Das made his way off the field. The commentators were shocked by the “unpleasant” stand-off and argued it was a bad look for the game at the World Cup. “Whoa,” Mark Nicholas said on Fox Cricket. “I don’t think I’ve seen that (before), I really don’t. That’s not a good look for the game of cricket. Liton Das furious, Sri Lanka jubilant.”“Kumara got in tight to Liton Das, it was quite unpleasant after the catch had been safely taken. “He’s an aggressive quick bowler, gets it up in the mid 140s (km/h) and no one wants to hold back on that aggression but equally, you don’t want to be showing unpleasant moments.”The incident is sure to attract the attention of the match referee. Nicholas added: “I’d like to say it was handbags I don’t know that it was.”The commentators believed the confrontation may have been linked to Kumara’s throw past Naim’s head in his previous over and Das may have wanted to stand up for his teammate. “Maybe (it was) from what happened in the last over,” one commentator said. “It was not the same batsman. Mohammad Naim was on strike when he (Kumara) was trying to throw the wicket down and sometimes you back up for your mate. “Maybe something was said after and that led to this incident.”While the commentators agreed the Kumara-Das confrontation was an ugly incident, they said it was difficult to know if Kumara was intentionally aiming to hit Naim in his earlier run out attempt. “Very difficult for a match referee or an umpire out there to be sure of intent,” Nicholas said. “You throw a ball like that in your follow through, you’re an aggressive fast bowler, you’re going to throw it with a lot of intent. “That isn’t to hurt but it’s certainly to threaten the stumps if you’re accurate and generally to alarm a bit. “It’s an explosion of temperament and it just needs to be sensibly monitored.”They speculated the hot and humid conditions in the UAE may have caused Kumara’s throw to be so off-target. “You don’t want to back down,” the other commentator said. “Not that Lahiru Kumara was trying to do anything wrong. “It’s just that sometimes in these sweaty conditions it can always slip out of your hand and your aiming at the stumps but it went a bit higher. “We’ve seen so many bowlers bowling beamers, sometimes in the heat with sweaty palms.”
