The Real Housewives of New York is full of dramatic storylines, friendship woes, and epic one-liners that Bravo fans can't get enough of. Between Luann de Lesseps, Ramona Singer, and Sonja Morgan, the three original housewives have enough drama for the entire cast. But when other wives and friends are added to the mix, things become more animated.
Some of the things that come out of the housewives' mouths are so out-of-bounds that they're entirely inappropriate and cringeworthy. Upon reflection, it's shocking some of these things were said in the first place because they're that awkward and jaw-dropping.
10 Dorinda: "Mario? Oh, Sorry, That's Right, He Left You For Someone Else."
In season 8, Carole Radziwill threw an intimate psychic reading party for the cast. While fans typically support Dorinda Meadley's raw reactions and truth-telling ways, she was too brutal with Ramona Singer in this scene.
The psychic told Dorinda that she was not going to marry the man she was then dating. After hearing the news, Ramona interrupted, "Oh, thank God!" The outburst bothered Dorinda and she said something cringy and below the belt to retaliate. To Ramona's face, she reminded her that her ex-husband Mario left her for another woman. The remark was embarrassing because it was in front of everyone – including cameras.
9 Kelly: "Al Sharpton!"
Kelly Bensimon said some of the most cringeworthy quotes in Real Housewives history in the "Scary Island" episode. While the women were on vacation, Kelly and Bethenny Frankle were clashing heads the entire trip. The other women tried not to get involved but it became impossible when Kelly began shouting cringy things.
At dinner, Kelly began spouting nonsense at Bethenny. Kelly claimed Bethenny was trying to kill her and thought she was gross. While Bethenny was trying to think of something sane to say in response to Kelly's many insults, Kelly began shouting, "Al Sharpton! Al Sharpton!" However, no one was sure why. Al Sharpton had no relation to the conversation and made Kelly appear unbalanced.
8 Aviva's Dad: "Baby, You Really Have A Beautiful Tan. If I Wasn't Your Father, Boy, I'd Be After You."
In season 5, past housewife Aviva Drescher introduced the women to a charming new man, her father George. Aviva warned the women that her father was single and had a large sexual appetite. Some of the women were intrigued by Geroge while others found him a tad too forward. But nothing was as cringy as what George said to Aviva after spending a few sunny days in Miami. He very dryly said, "If I wasn't you're father, boy, I'd be after you." Aviva and George laughed the comment off in jest but it's something that fans still shudder at for its tastelessness.
7 Ramona: "I Love Her. I Think I Do —I Don't Know. Do I? Anyway, She's Not The Smartest Person."
Ramona knows that she can say some outlandish things from time to time but in her mind, she's speaking the truth. Her decisions can be shocking and her actions can be two-faced but she's Ramona Singer and she doesn't make any apologies for it.
One of her more relatable, albeit cringy, moments, however, was when she was talking to herself about another housewife. Out loud, she questioned herself and her loyalty to this person — forgetting that the cameras were rolling and catching everything she was saying. Not only was she unsure of whether she loved this housewife or not, but she also insulted them by claiming they weren't smart. This accidental confession showed both Ramona's honesty and her sometimes brutal opinions about the other cast members.
6 Sonja: "He May Be Her Soulmate But I've Been Doing Him Forever."
In season 8, Luann admitted to the group that she has moved on from her divorce and was in love with a new man named Tom. However, Tom wasn't a new name or face to a few of the other housewives. Sonja Morgan was hilariously unenthused by the news that Luann was with Tom because she, apparently, had been "doing him forever."
Due to Sonja's obvious jealousy at her friends moving to different and exciting relationships, Sonja tends to start fights out of fear of being alone. Her cynicism is easy to spot by viewers but this quote, as funny as it is, comes off as cringy because of the jealousy behind it. She still feels the need to be better than Luann and denigrates her new relationship by insinuating that it wasn't unique or special.
5 Bethenny: "Trying To Get Her Laid Is Like Saving Private Ryan. We're All Gonna Die Trying."
Since Ramona's divorce, she has enjoyed dating around and indulging in affairs with multiple men. However, Ramona has high standards and doesn't settle for any man that simply looks her way.
When Ramona was available for companionship, Bethenny connected her with attractive singles who did promotions for Bethenny's company, Skinny Girl, but they weren't good enough for Ramona. She thought some were too young, some weren't cute enough for her, and others weren't successful enough. Because of Ramona's standards, Bethenny compared her dating life to the mission in Saving Private Ryan. As iconic as Bethenny's line is in the RHONY series, it is cringy because she's comparing Ramona's bedroom life to a death mission. Bethenney tastelessly links Ramona's relatively innocent hesitation to settling down with a violent movie about war.
4 Ramona: "Who's Being Cheap About The Air Conditioning?"
When the women traveled from New York City to Heather Thomson's house in the Berkshires, Ramona was immediately put off by how warm the house was. In a pretentious way, Ramona asked "Who's being cheap about the air conditioning?" while judging Heather's home.
To make matters worse, Ramona went ahead and bought an air conditioning unit to keep her bedroom cold. Heather was insulted by Ramona's blunt thoughts as everyone else sympathized on her behalf. Ramona wasn't being "honest" here; instead, she wanted to insult her friend by suggesting she was too cheap to pay for a relatively common luxury.
3 Luann: "If I'm A Loser, The Rest Of The World Sucks."
At a themed dinner party, Bethenny got into one of her biggest fights in RHONY with Carole. Carole was upset that Bethenny wasn't supportive of her during her half-marathon, and Bethenny was defending herself. But in the middle of the argument, Carole admitted to everyone that Bethenny called Luann a "loser."
Luann didn't appreciate her name being pulled into the argument and told the table, "I'm a loser, then the rest of the world sucks." The table fell silent at her confession because of how ostentatious it sounded. In a confessional, Luann continued saying "If I'm a loser... then God.. Do I look like a loser to you," insinuating that she's anything but. Viewers winced at Luann's delusional self-defense as the housewife couldn't accept that others saw her as less than perfect. She felt it necessary to put everyone else down as well.
2 Ramona: "We Were At A Place With A Lot Of Drag Queens And I Thought That's What You Were Initially."
Luann is known for her gorgeous height and husky voice. Her voice and looks are what makes her a successful cabaret star. However, a few of the housewives have made some insulting remarks about Luann over the years and have compared her to a man.
In one unforgettable RHONY moment, Ramona insulting her Luann by comparing her to a drag queen. Ramona's dish was cringy because it failed to make an impact and was incredibly insensitive. Luann took her remark in stride and was proud to be likened to the artistic and talented queens.
1 Kelly: "You're Not A Chef, You're A Cook."
Kelly Bensimon is no longer a cast member but she was a part of some of the best seasons of Housewives. She fought with most of the cast, but it was Bethenny in particular who got under her skin. In one episode, Bethenny planned on cooking everyone a beautiful meal. With Bethenny being a trained cook and someone in the food and beverage business, Bethenny knew what she was doing in the kitchen.
However, Kelly was unimpressed. She tried hitting Bethenny where it hurt and told her she wasn't a chef — she was a cook. Bethenny didn't take Kelly's words as an insult but that was exactly what Kelly was trying to do — insult her. Instead, it came off as cringy, petty, and cruel.
