Sam Raimi loved seeing Alfred Molina's Doc Ock return in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. Molina first appeared as the classic antagonist in Raimi's Spider-Man 2, which was released in 2004. His portrayal of Otto Octavius is still considered one of the finest villain performances in a comic book movie. That's why there's much excitement in seeing him return as part of No Way Home's multiverse story, with the MCU sequel bringing in actors from previous iterations of the Spider-Man franchise.
In late August, Sony finally kicked off the long-awaited No Way Home marketing campaign by releasing the first trailer, which set up several key story details. The preview confirmed the multiverse angle, ending with Molina's Doc Ock menacingly greeting Peter Parker on a bridge (whether it's Tom Holland's version or a different Peter remains to be seen). It was clearly a standout moment of the trailer, and even Raimi enjoyed what he saw.
Speaking with Syfy while promoting Netflix's Nightbooks, Raimi revealed his reaction to the No Way Home trailer. Unsurprisingly, he had positive things to say. Check out his comments in the space below:
“That was beautiful. He looks great, the animation’s great. I’m assuming it’s not puppeted because when we did Doc Ock, we had puppets and animation for his octopus tentacles. But it was smooth and powerful and I loved his costume they kept [from the original]. I think it’s gonna be a great movie."
Raimi is now part of the MCU as well, having directed next year's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He isn't going to badmouth another project in the same franchise, but it's still nice to hear him speak so highly of Molina's return. Raimi was very passionate about his Spider-Man trilogy, as he is a big fan of the original comics. It probably brought back many fond memories and emotions seeing Molina's Ock onscreen again. In his comments, Raimi seemed most interested in the technical approach to bringing Doc Ock to life. It remains to be seen if No Way Home will utilize the old school puppets of Spider-Man 2 or just go with modern CGI animation.
In Spider-Man 2, Doc Ock got a full character arc and received a heroic death at the end, so it will be interesting to see how the character is integrated into the No Way Home narrative and what role he plays. Doc Ock could be part of a Sinister Six team-up, as the trailer hints at other villains like Jamie Foxx's Electro and Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin. It seems like Sony is using Octavius as the public face of the multiverse angle in marketing, so perhaps future promotional materials will shed more light on what director Jon Watts has in store. Hopefully Raimi is right, and Spider-Man: No Way Home is a great movie that pays homage to all the films that came before.
