Netflix’s recent action release, Kate, gave viewers an exhilarating plot, memorable characters, and quite a few unforgettable lines. These quotes speak volumes about the murderous people in the film, with a few showing whatever is left of the characters’ humanity.
With only one day left to accomplish her last mission, the titular assassin kicks everything into overdrive. In between violent hand-to-hand combat and brutal gunfights, there are some surprisingly intimate moments of honesty between the characters. The lines said during these scenes highlight the high-stakes situation the killers and their collateral damage find themselves in.
10 “The Worst Way To Start A Conversation Is A ‘Hey.’ It’s Boring. It’s Dull. It’s For Horses.” – Stephen
When viewers first meet Stephen, it’s easy to think that he may be Kate’s way out of her violent life as an assassin. His charm and wit are apparent in this line, which is stated after he makes an awkward introduction with a cheesy pickup line. Kate responds by smiling and saying “Hey,” unknowingly starting the clock for the last day of her life.
Stephen turns out to be an unwitting accomplice in the assassination attempt, with him and his partner admitting that they didn’t know the drink was spiked with Polonium-204. He’s not exactly a memorable character, but at least he gave fans some good advice about flirting.
9 “Now, You Start The Rest Of Your Life.” – Varrick
Kate’s handler and only friend is, unfortunately, a manipulative and selfish person who will do anything and betray anyone to get what he wants. In the flashbacks shown in the movie, viewers learn about the extent of Varrick’s terrible role in molding killers like Kate.
With this quote, Varrick echoes the same thing he told Kate after she lost her parents and sibling, who were likely murdered by the handler himself. This time, he’s set his sights on the young Ani, quickly replacing Kate and proving that he feels no remorse at all about his actions.
8 “Some People Have This Extraordinary Attachment To Their Siblings, As If Genetics Make A Family.” – Varrick
One of the several moments in the film that proves Varrick deserves a spot next to the most evil movie villains happens after Kate reaches out to him for help. He sits across from Kate, fully aware that it’s his fault she only has a few hours to live. Despite having worked with her for years, he points her in the wrong direction for his own gain.
V blames Kijima for the Polonium, coming up with a lie about how it’s revenge for his brother’s death. By saying “as if genetics make a family,” he’s implying that he’s Kate’s family, even if they’re not genetically related. It’s another pathetic diversion and emotionally manipulative move that unfortunately sets Kate on the wrong path.
7 “I Prefer Self-Interest. I Trust It More.” – Renji
Renji may not be one of the smartest characters on Kate, but he knows enough not to trust people like Varrick. This quote is said during a confrontation between the two where V gets angry with Renji for misinterpreting his statement about killing Kate.
To diffuse the situation and to make his introduction to the Yakuza smoother, V takes a few steps back and asks Renji if they can put the entire misunderstanding behind them “in the name of being human.” Renji understands that they’ve crossed that line long ago and any shred of humanity left in them is easily outweighed by selfishness and aggression.
6 “Boom Boom Lemon?” – Kate
This simple yet notable line is especially impactful when Kate finally finds her favorite drink in Kijima’s car. Every time she asks for Boom Boom Lemon from different stores and even Ani at one point, it reminds viewers that she’s only human and wants the comfort of something familiar.
In the first few moments of the film, Varrick hands Kate the iconic juice. The two of them are comfortable and can trust one another to be able to anticipate the other’s needs. With Varrick’s betrayal and Kate’s imminent death, her only consolation is holding on to that seemingly insignificant symbol of her relatively better past.
5 “You’re So Cool. But You’re Also A Terminator, B**ch.” – Ani
After Kate accepts Ani’s offer to help her get to Kijima, they share a lighthearted moment over dinner. At this point, she’s cleaned Kate up with a new shirt and even gifted her with a fashionable disguise in the form of trendy sunglasses.
It's clear that Ani is one of the most likable characters in the film and it’s easy to see why with this endearing line. She has faced a traumatic loss and then a painful betrayal by her own family, so it makes sense that she would idolize the cool badass character who will stop at nothing to save her life. She wants to learn how to be strong like Kate, unfazed by the bloodshed and hurt all around them.
4 “I’m Your Handler Now – That Makes Me Your Mother, Your Father, Your Best Friend, And Your Therapist.” – Varrick
As Kate’s handler, V took on more than just the role of a trainer. He had to fill the void that the protagonist’s family left. However, viewers know that the cold-hearted villain is far from the caring father figure he postures himself to be.
Behind his friendly mask, Varrick hides an unremorseful and narcissistic personality. Even his last interaction with Kate is a sad attempt at saving his own life. She can see through his lies clearly in this scene, however, now that she has something to live for. Kate finally figured out in the end that V never cared about anything except for himself – she was merely a tool for the low-level handler who had high ambitions and no regard for collateral damage.
3 “Because You’re A F***ing Kid. Go Be One. I Never Could.” – Kate
The protagonist’s unbelievable character development in the span of just one day makes her the best character in Kate. With only a few hours left to live, she decides that Ani needs her guidance and her friendship.
Ani wasn’t lying when she said she could be useful for the assassin and she’s able to lead Kate to Kijima’s home. This is the moment Kate asks her to leave, however, as the hardened killer knows that it’s not too late for the young teen to live her life and leave the violence behind.
2 “You’re Young. You Have Time To Forget. Be Someone Less Angry.” – Kate
Ani lashes out when Kate asks her to go – she wants a shot at revenge against her uncle as well, who she believes is responsible for her father’s death. This is definitely painful for Kate, who knows that the truth will only hurt the young girl even more.
She sees herself in Ani, who, like her, has lost her family and has no one else to turn to. Kate wants to make sure that Ani never has to experience the same messed up life that she led, which was full of violence, pain, and anger. Kate has grown attached to the kid and wants to die knowing that she will be okay.
1 “Death Is The Time For The Beginnings.” - Kijima
Right when audiences think the movie is ending in the worst way possible, Kijima appears and echoes this powerful line that he told Kate during their confrontation. When Kate’s entire plan turns out to be a sham, she desperately tries to figure out what to do with her last few minutes.
Kijima calmly says that death is not the end and for a moment, viewers are led to believe that he’s shot. He thankfully shows up again to hand a dying Kate her last shot at accomplishing the correct mission, with the two of them now united by the common goal of saving Ani from V. The old man offers his hand out to help V up and convinces her she can keep going by reminding her: “Death is a beginning, yes?”
