John Cena Interested In Playing The Thing In Fantastic Four Reboot

The Suicide Squad's John Cena slyly expresses interest in playing the Thing in Marvel Studios' upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. The MCU's iteration of Marvel Comics' First Family will be the third (technically fourth, including the unreleased 1994 adaptation produced by Roger Corman) cinematic interpretation of the iconic superhero team. Despite being one of the company's oldest and most influential IPs, no film adaptation has quite hit the mark in its depiction of the Fantastic Four thus far. Because of this, Marvel Studios' announcement that they would finally bring the team into the MCU delighted many fans who felt that the studio would be able to finally do the team justice.

As the name suggests, the team is comprised of four core members: Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing, all of whom receive superpowers after being exposed to cosmic radiation during a mission to space. Even prior to Marvel Studios' official confirmation of the MCU's Fantastic Four, fans have speculated on current actors that may be compatible with each role – the most popular fan-cast being John Krasinski and Emily Blunt as Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman, respectively. Now, it appears Cena's name has been tossed into the hat of potential Fantastic Four stars as the Thing.

In a recent YouTube video for Esquire, Cena gave a sly answer in response to a question asking if he'd consider playing Marvel's Thing. In a series of "thing" related puns, the WWE star says that he, "would consider most any-thing." Check out Cena's full comments below, via CBR:

I would consider most any-thing. I think keeping yourself open to options and different perspectives is a good way to go about life. This would simply be a thing that I would consider, because I like to keep my perspective open to new things.

Cena has already proved to be fantastic in the role of a comic book character as Peacemaker in James Gunn's latest filmThe Suicide Squad. His role in the film is significant with several emotionally intense scenes to boot, all of which the actor nails. These skills would be highly transferable into playing the Thing, who is one of Marvel's more complex and nuanced super-strength individuals.

In the comics, Ben Grimm (the Thing's real name, which the character generally prefers to his dehumanizing superhero moniker) often resents his altered appearance after acquiring his superpowers. Appearing as a giant rock-like monster understandably makes it difficult for Grimm to adjust to everyday society, which is one of the character's most frequent personal struggles outside of superpowered conflicts. As such, Cena's quippy but emotionally resonant acting sensibilities could be a great fit for the role. When Marvel begins casting for their upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, Cena's name is definitely one that should be considered.
