Jerry O'Connell weighs in on a clever piece of South Park art that imagines him as Cartman. South Park is one of the most beloved and well-known adult animated series of the last few decades. It's been a pop culture staple since its premiere in 1997 and has been praised for its sharp writing and satire. Even more than twenty years after its debut, South Park remains a reliable performer for Comedy Central and a big part of the cultural conversation. The series and its characters show no signs of slowing down, either, with creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone signing a new deal with ViacomCBS in August 2021. It resulted in a mind-boggling six-season renewal for South Park and the promise of fourteen new movies.
Of all the characters on South Park, Eric Cartman is arguably one of the most well-known. Voiced by Parker, Cartman often displays politically incorrect or offensive behavior, which can be polarizing for viewers. Still, his character is widely considered not only one of South Park's strongest, but one of the best cartoon characters of all time. Cartman is integral to the success of the show and its overall tone.
Considering the popularity of South Park and its characters, the series is frequently the subject of fan art and other homages. Recently, O'Connell reacted to a piece of art transforming the characters of Stand by Me into South Park's core foursome. O'Connell's Vern Tessio becomes Cartman, which the actor hilariously addressed in a tweet:
This art isn't the first time in recent months fans have had fun with Cartman specifically; TikTok videos posted in May showed one artist imagining how the South Park character would sing songs by Linkin Park and Green Day. The Stand by Me mashup art illustrates a similar level of creativity. Though South Park and Stand by Me don't seem like a natural pairing, putting them together in this way works surprisingly well. The edit is also impressively seamless, providing a realistic look at what a live-action version of the show could be like.
Of course, a big part of the art's appeal is O'Connell's funny reaction. Since Cartman is an especially controversial South Park character, it makes sense the actor jokingly took issue with it. The art also shows how the series has endured over the years, not unlike Stand by Me, which remains a classic to this day.
