The Suicide Squad director James Gunn just shared the incredible wrap gift that star Peter Capaldi made for him. The film, which also features Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Sylvester Stallone, and Viola Davis, was released on August 6 and follows a new team of baddies assembled by Task Force X embarking on a dangerous mission to Corto Maltese to destroy a lab running a mysterious program known only as Project Starfish.
The head of Project Starfish is Gaius Grieves (AKA The Thinker), played by Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi. The mad scientist has a unique look, having inserted electronic parts into his skull, supposedly to increase his superhuman intelligence. He obviously enjoyed performing such an over-the-top role, as evidenced by recently released Suicide Squad backstage photos that show Capaldi in full make-up playing with some of the gore effects.
Capaldi enjoyed the role so much, he immortalized it in a sketch at the end of the shoot. On his Twitter, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn shared the portrait, which Capaldi drew on a page of the script and presented to him as a wrap gift. The drawing is a shockingly excellent interpretation of The Thinker, completed with a detailed and colorful background full of floating starfish and panicked hands reaching out in terror, signed "To James, Thank you for an amazing time, you are the best, Love Peter C." Check out the Tweet and the drawing below:
This level of passion for the project from the cast and crew is likely a big reason The Suicide Squad is the most-watched DC movie on HBO Max. This must have taken Peter Capaldi hours, considering it's even more detailed than the actual character poster for The Thinker that was used to promote the film. He even selected the exact page of the script where his character introduces the gargantuan extraterrestrial starfish, Starro the Conquerer.
The drawing really shows how deeply everyone on set understood the colorful, busy aesthetic of The Suicide Squad. It's strong evidence that the cast and crew were quite literally on the same page. For those who want to relive the magic before The Suicide Squad leaves HBO Max, James Gunn and the cast will be hosting a watch party on Twitter on Monday, August 30 at 6pm PT/9pm ET. Fans should be sure to stay on the lookout for any additional backstage tidbits about Capaldi, The Thinker, and the rest of the squad there.
