For 11 seasons, Modern Family has brought the giggles and good-feeling moments focused around the Dunphys, Delgardo-Pritchetts, and Tucker-Pritchetts. The modern families have transformed in front of viewers over the years and have had as many monumental moments as they've had tragic. However, that doesn't mean every episode is a standout.
Thanks to Reddit, fans have come together to share episodes that live rent-free in their heads, as well as episodes that they tend to skip. As humorous and lovable as these characters are, some episodes are too cringeworthy or forgettable to be deemed as viewable.
10 Send Out The Clowns
Cameron admitted early on in the series that he went to clown college and is passionate about dressing up as Fizbo the Clown. In 'Send Out the Clowns,' Cam runs into his old clowning partner, Lewis, where they decide to become a clown duo again. For Fizbo fans, it was one of Cam's best moments. However, not every fan enjoys Fizbo.
Are-You-Really-Sure told Reddit, "I generally dislike any plot pertaining [to] Fizbo." While NatxNat admitted that they "hate" when "[Cam's] old partner Lewis comes back." Considering Lewis's resentment towards Cam (and Fizbo), it made the episode dark rather than funny.
9 All Things Being Equal
As lovable as the characters of Modern Family are, they can be their own villain at times; their own worse enemy. In 'All Things Being Equal," the women head to a feminist march to set a good example for equality among the sexes. But when they get a flat tire they're at a loss. A stranger appears and tries to help them, and as a woman, the family accepted the help. However, some found the episode off-putting.
The Dunphy/Delgado-Pritchett/Tucker-Pritchett clan could have empowered themselves by changing the tire, but they didn't. Likewise, Luke and Manny were also at the march but only as a way to meet women. JCT05 told Reddit, "I don’t like that one about the feminist parade because I found Manny to be extra creepy in it." Instead of learning from the parade, the young men took away the wrong message.
8 Whanex
'Whanex' had different storylines for each character, but the one storyline that fans loathed was Cam's presentation called 'What Next?' for the high school. As a teacher, Cam wanted to prepare high school seniors for what to expect after school. He used Manny, Alex, Luke, and Haley as examples of what to aim for and what to ignore.
Berlin180 said, "Embarrassing and basically mocking all four family members present in front of an audience for his own convenience and career is a sign of a real [problem]." It was one of Cam's more toxic moments because he embarrassed those he loved for the sake of a presentation.
7 Kids These Days
In 'Kids These Days,' Mitch and Phil are spending the day together by going to see the new Star Wars movie. They make a quick stop for lunch at Mitch's favorite gay bar when they ran into an unlikely character, Phil's enemy, Gil Thorpe.
As it turns out, Gil realized he was gay and had been spending more time there. However, his behavior was distasteful and aggressive. UnholyCin agreed and wrote, "To begin with he's your average nemesis, but by the end he's just a complete pig." Gil was one character that fans were happy to leave the show so soon.
6 Spring Break
As is the case with most episodes, 'Spring Break' had a lot going on. To take her mind off being denied from her dream school, Alex and Haley go to a concert where they both get drunk. Meanwhile, Phil is at home doing spring cleaning when he realizes his son is better at just about everything that Phil used to be good at.
It wasn't Phil's personality type on Modern Family to be angry and jealous, which is why fans had a problem with the episode. One fan thought that "Phil's jealousy of Luke a bit too heavy" in the episode. Others disliked it because they found Alex "annoying."
5 Knock 'Em Down
In 'Knock 'Em Down,' Cam persuades Jay to join his gay bowling league team for a championship game. Jay didn't feel comfortable playing because he himself was straight, but Cam convinced him his sexual preferences didn't matter. It was a Jay and Cam moment that brought them closer as friends.
However, after playing for a few minutes, Cam realized he was mistaken and began telling everyone that Jay was gay. As lighthearted as the episode was, one viewer said that they've watched this episode over and over and they don't "even remember laughing." Perhaps the writing in this episode wasn't as funny as writers thought.
4 Mother!
In 'Mother!', the entire family is surprised when DeDe Pritchett comes to visit unannounced. She attempts to visit Mitchel and Cameron first but the couple began fighting as soon as she got there. She later stopped by the Dunphy residence, but as always, Claire couldn't stand her presence.
UnholyCin said, "[I'm] not a big fan of the show trying to play DeDe's emotional manipulation as being something she does because she's a loving mother." Sadly, DeDe passed away later in the series, causing one of the most emotional Modern Family deaths, but her time on the show wasn't always positive.
3 Dead On Arrival
Mitch and Cam's relationship doesn't always make sense. They seem to bicker and disagree more than get along, often finding themselves in trouble. This continued in 'Dead on Arrival" when an older neighbor stopped by their home because he used to live there when he was younger.
He wished to die in their house, which prompted Mitch and Cam to do some research and get involved in the man's life when they shouldn't have. RealityCheck18 admitted the episode was "boring," saying, "I seriously cannot even recollect anything from that episode."
2 Regrets Only
According to Responsible-Frame5611, the episode 'Regrets Only' "Takes one of Modern Family's best qualities and shoves that down the toilet." They found that the storylines were negative and "mean-spirited," which is unlike most Modern Family episodes.
In the episode, Claire and Phil are arguing over a late-night misunderstanding, Haley is trying to dupe her parents into getting her a car, and Jay loathes Gloria's newfound love of karaoke.
1 Farm Strong
In 'Farm Strong,' fans meet Cam's sister, Pam, for the first time. Pam flew all the way to Los Angeles from Missouri, which had Cam and Mitch in nerves.
According to Cam, Pam can be quite jealous of Cam's achievements and isn't the most positive person because she was supposedly single. CBAFCMV noted that they "hated Cam's family," while Sgash found her "unnecessary and annoying" in this episode.
