Scanning makes its return in NEO: The World Ends With You. This guide will show players how they can activate this ability. The World Ends With You has a dormant Square Enix series for several generations. With the original title releasing back on the Nintendo DS and a mobile and Nintendo Switch port making its modern appearance, NEO: The World Ends With You is exactly what players have been requesting for years. This is an entirely new story where players will control Rindo in order to discover the secrets of the Reapers Game. Scanning is an ability that players can use to help them navigate through Shibuya. This guide will show players how they can use it.
Scanning is a power that allows players to do a variety of things. For starters, Scanning will allow players to battle Noise scattered around in the area. Typically, these need to be defeated to unlock access behind hidden doors or to grind for leveling up. Not only that, but players can eavesdrop on nearby character's thoughts and conversations. These will typically provide clues to the player on how to solve specific puzzles. Scanning is required in order to progress through the game and discover all of its hidden content.
Players will unlock the ability to Scan in NEO fairly early into the game. Once it's available, players will be able to press R1 or R (depending on their platform) to scan the environment. Scanning only works when in the overworld. The screen will become a bit darker when Scanning has been activated. Players can then interact with the nearby Noise and listen in on a conversation. This is a mechanic that players will come back to again and again when playing through the game.
NEO: The World Ends With You came as a surprise when it was officially announced. Outside of various different ports, the only time the central cast got any attention was when the characters made their way to the Kingdom Hearts series in Dream Drop Distance. This is an entirely new story that brings in characters from the past. Without getting into spoilers, players should aim to play the first entry before jumping into this one. While it isn't required, it will give players a better understanding of the context available in the game.
NEO: The World Ends With You is available now on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
