Narrator Ted often drops hints about certain aspects of his tale, which prevents How I Met Your Mother from having too many shocking plot twists. However, most viewers admit that they were caught off guard by the show's controversial ending.
Not only did Barney and Robin get divorced, but Ted and Robin got back together in the present day. While the ending came as a surprise, the rest of the show didn't. Other than the last few bombs How I Met Your Mother dropped, the outcome of events that took place during the series were fairly predictable.
10 Ted & Robin Getting Together (The First Time)
Ted revealed in the pilot that Robin wasn't the mother when he referred to her as "Aunt" Robin. But that didn't mean Ted and Robin would never get together, and it was clear from the beginning what direction their relationship was headed in. He spent the entire first season trying to shake his feelings for Robin, but he never could.
The Season 1 finale is when many television couples call things official, so even the order of events wasn't shocking. There were several times Ted and Robin were relationship goals in How I Met Your Mother, but because she wasn't the mom, their breakup in the second season was also obvious.
9 Lily Going To San Francisco
Marshall and Lily didn't have anywhere to go but down, and their breakup was foreshadowed multiple times throughout How I Met Your Mother Season 1. Marshall was all-in when it came to his relationship with Lily, but Lily was clearly having doubts.
Lily didn't just want to follow her dreams of being an artist, but she wanted to find out who she was outside of Marshall. As Ted pointed out, there are plenty of art programs in New York that Lily could have applied for, but chose not to. It was only a matter of time before Lily left Marshall to do some soul searching.
8 Lily & Marshall Getting Back Together
From the way Ted told his kids about Aunt Lily and Uncle Marshall, it was clear that they were still together in the present day. There are many ways Lily and Marshall are the dream couple, and they were the anchor to a show that needed stability.
It was a bit disappointing that Lily and Marshall got back together so quickly since the whole point of their breakup was to work on who they were as individuals. But their reconciliation and marriage were inevitable, and fans saw it coming from a mile away.
7 Stella Leaving Ted For Tony
The show attempted to keep things ominous for a while, but viewers weren't convinced that Stella was the show's titular character. Her relationship with Ted was rushed and Stella didn't seem at all like the woman Ted described to his kids.
Their engagement was never going to last, and the only question was how long it would go on before they called it quits. As it turns out, How I Met Your Mother waited until the very last minute for Stella to leave Ted at the altar. But Stella continued to talk about Tony while she and Ted were together, so no one, other than Ted, was surprised when she went back to him.
6 Lily Getting Pregnant
Lily and Marshall were always going to be the first couple in the group to do everything. They were engaged, married, bought an apartment together, and kids were the rational next step considering that they both wanted to be parents. The biggest question was when she would get pregnant. Marshall and Lily had quite a few false positives thrown their way.
But season finales are the most likely time for major events to happen, and because they had been trying for the entirety of How I Met Your Mother Season 6, Lily's pregnancy was a safe bet. Lily spending the whole day throwing up and attributing it to eating bad soup was also a good tip-off.
5 Ted Still Being In Love With Robin
No matter who viewers shipped with who, it was obvious that Ted always held a torch for Robin. There were times when he repressed it since they both wanted different things, but there was always going to be something between them.
When Ted realized that he had never stopped loving Robin, it came as no surprise. It did complicate Barney's relationship with Ted, but him pursuing his best friend's ex in the first place is just one of many things about Barney that would never fly today.
4 Marshall Getting Offered A Job As A Judge
How I Met Your Mother was coming to an end and there was still no word on whether or not Marshall would get his dream job. The circumstances in which it came about was a bit of a surprise, but Marshall's career had to be addressed at some point.
Marshall's aspiration to be a judge isn't something the show would just drop, and Marshall and Lily were about to go off to Rome with still no word on his application. The timing of it might've shocked some viewers, but there was never much doubt that he would receive the offer.
3 Barney & Robin Getting Married
The show dropped plenty of hints in advance and even showed Barney and Robin at their wedding before the two got engaged. But Robin was questioning her feelings for her fiancée on her wedding weekend, which was one of many reasons why How I Met Your Mother was right to break Barney and Robin up.
However, there was no uncertainty that the two would get married, even if the marriage didn't last. Flashforwards of Barney and Robin as a married couple confirmed that they would go through with the wedding.
2 Robin Becoming A Famous Reporter
With the exception of Marshall, Robin had the strongest work ethic out of the main How I Met Your Mother characters. Most of her major life decisions were related to her career, and it was important to Robin to keep her aspirations at the forefront of her mind.
As usual, Ted gave away Robin's success as a news reporter, so it didn't come as a surprise for that reason alone. But even without a narrator spoiling the story, it would've been obvious that Robin's ambitious personality would cause her to eventually excel in her field.
1 The Mother Having Passed
Most viewers didn't start to suspect this until the end of the series, but a good amount of the audience figured it out before the final episode aired. There were hints dropped throughout that foreshadowed the mother's death, but it didn't become obvious until How I Met Your Mother Season 9.
The scene in which Ted starts tearing up when Tracy asks what mom would miss her daughter's wedding was a red flag that something wasn't right. However, it didn't make the confirmation that the mother had been dead all along any less brutal.
