Since Friends is the kind of comforting sitcom that fans can watch over and over again, everyone has their favorite episodes. But even though a re-watch is always going to be fun, fans don't want to watch every single episode more than once. This might be because a storyline doesn't make sense, a favorite couple is fighting, or they just don't find the plot all that funny. Since this is such a beloved and iconic show, these lackluster episodes definitely stand out.
Viewers have taken to Reddit to share their least favorite episodes of Friends and the ones that they always skip when they're doing a full re-watch of the series or when a re-run comes on TV.
10 "The One With The Morning After" (S3, E16)
Reddit user maverick340 said, "I always skip Season 3 Episode 16 - The One With The Morning After. [It's] been ages since I've seen that." In this episode, Ross feels awful after having sex with Chloe, and although he and Rachel had agreed to take some time apart, he still knows that he messed up.
Friends fans debate Ross and Rachel's break, and since this is such a controversial aspect of the series, it's no wonder that some people prefer to skip this episode. It's definitely frustrating watching these characters dance around each other without admitting that of course they love each other and should stay together.
9 "The One With The Fake Party" (S4, E16)
One Redditor said, "Always the one where Rachel throws a fake party for Emily to get closer to Joshua." Reddit user IsThatADinoOnUrTie replied that they don't like "how Rachel acts around Joshua."
This isn't a very popular episode since fans don't like that Rachel acts like she's having a gathering to say farewell to Emily, but she really just wants to flirt with Joshua. Viewers also dislike when Rachel puts on her high school cheerleading uniform. It's awkward to see Rachel be anything but her usual sweet, confident self.
8 "The One With All The Thanksgivings" (S5, E8)
For Reddit user rawrfudge, they skip "all the flashback ones" as high school Monica "makes me so uncomfortable."
One of the most well-known flashback episodes is season 5's "The One With All The Thanksgivings" and this features the offensive and problematic discussion of "fat Monica." This episode is particularly tough to re-watch as teenage Chandler calls Monica overweight. While he apologizes in the present-day portion of the episode, it still makes total sense why fans would ignore this episode now. Viewers much prefer watching Monica and Chandler's heartwarming journey from friends to soulmates.
7 "The One Where Ross And Rachel Take A Break" (S3, E15)
Season 3 is a rough one for Rachel and Ross fans. One Redditor wrote, "I tend to skip over the big ross/rachel break up episode and the clip shows, like others have mentioned."
Some think Rachel and Ross are a bad sitcom couple as they go on this break because Rachel doesn't feel that Ross cares enough about her career dreams. It's hard to watch this season 3 episode since it seems like Ross could tell Rachel that he thinks her job is great and that he's going to be there for her. But he doesn't seem willing to say anything positive about her situation, leading to their break that fans still talk about to this day.
6 "The One Where Joey Speaks French" (S10, E13)
Joey is always praised as one of the most hilarious Friends characters but fans don't love every episode of his. For Reddit user Hap_Hazardous, one of the worst episodes of the sitcom is "The one where Joey speaks French."
While Joey has to learn French for an audition, and it's nice that Phoebe helps him out, this isn't a popular storyline with many viewers. Joey has a tough time learning the language, but the storyline veers into offensive territory when Phoebe lies and tells the director that he's her brother and he has a mental disability. It's hard to imagine this airing today, and since many episodes have followed Joey's desire to become a successful actor, it's not necessary, either.
5 "The One Where No One Proposes" (S9, E1)
Reddit user ASREV doesn't love this season 9 episode and explained, "Last night I skipped the one where no one proposes. That whole plot of Joey proposing and Ross getting upset is grating."
For many fans, Joey and Rachel's romance was going to fail, and this episode has a strange and confusing storyline. In the season 8 finale, Rachel has her daughter Emma and believes that she and Joey are engaged. Joey has trouble explaining that he didn't propose at all. It's a good choice to skip this episode since it feels unrealistic and unnecessary.
4 "The One With The Truth About London" (S7, E16)
Reddit user quesadilla17 explained their issue with this season 7 episode: "It has a couple [of] good scenes, but I don't like the new elements it introduced to how Monica and Chandler got together."
In this episode, fans learn that when Monica knocked on the hotel room door, she was interested in having sex with Joey. Since Chandler was there, she slept with him, and then, of course, they began dating. It's no wonder that viewers wish that this episode had a different storyline, as this changes the origin story of this popular couple. And since fans don't enjoy the Joey and Rachel relationship, it makes sense that they wouldn't want Monica and Joey to be romantically involved, either.
3 "The One Where Joey Dates Rachel" (S8, E12)
Reddit user King_Kong_The_eleven shared that they skip "Any Joey Rachel episode," making this season 8 episode seem like a logical one to skip over.
Joey and Rachel go out on a date as Rachel is bummed that she's not in a relationship. She thinks that they're just friends and he starts to feel something more. Many viewers feel that this is one of the worst romances on the show as they don't buy that these two characters would like each other. Their chemistry feels off and it doesn't feel like they have a special connection, unlike Ross and Rachel.
2 "The Last One" (S10, E17 and E18)
Reddit user ezmang0 said, "I don’t ever watch the final two episodes. It’s too emotional and I always end up sobbing."
While the Friends finale brought up some questions, fans generally approve of the way that the story wrapped up since everyone got a happy ending. It's definitely heartbreaking watching the characters move away from each other, though, and it's particularly tough to imagine Rachel and Monica not living together anymore. In this case, some people choose to skip this episode because it's too sad, not because it's not funny or poorly made.
1 "The One With Rachel's Inadvertent Kiss" (S5, E17)
For one Redditor, this season 5 episode should always be skipped. They wrote, "I skip the one where Monica is 'competing' with Pheobe over who's the hotter couple. Monica's obsession with being the best and Chandler's response is so cringey to me."
While Monica is a competitive person, it's uncomfortable to see her get so upset about Phoebe and Gary's sex life. She wants Phoebe to think that she and Chandler have more sex, which seems a bit strange. There are much better Friends episodes that show the sweet dynamic between the characters.
