Janice Dickinson, the most notorious of the America’s Next Top Model judges, is speaking out about some of the surprising realities of the hit TV show. Although ANTM now become known for its problematic and dangerous photo shoots, in its heyday the show was a network juggernaut that was immensely popular. However, Janice is spilling some of the show’s tea, including about her feud with Tyra Banks, which places ANTM in a whole new light.
From cycles 1 through 4 (and a few guest spots after that), Janice was an outspoken judge who represented the cutthroat old-school modeling world. With lots of tough love, Janice attempted to mold the contestants into models who could actually have successful careers. The sometimes-blunt judge never hesitated to hold back her often controversial opinions, and it’s no surprise that Janice’s larger-than-life personality clashed significantly with host and producer Tyra.
Like many of the cast, including Jay Manuel, Janice eventually left the show with some bad blood between her and Tyra. Janice appeared on the Behind the Velvet Rope podcast and revealed that her experience on ANTM was a bit of a mixed bag. The renowned supermodel enjoyed the fabulous traveling she did for the show, but working with Tyra was a real downer. “Sitting next to Tyra for hours and hours can be daunting,” Janice said, “because she didn’t really like me and we didn’t really get along...I did Vogue. She did Elle, and I used to constantly remind her of that.”
“You know, I didn’t really treat her like a producer,” Janice continued, when talking about Tyra. “She kept saying, ‘But I’m the producer of the show’… I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, right, whatever.’” Janice claimed that Tyra was also cheap and unappreciative, giving the crew “hamburgers or McDonald’s Whoppers for Christmas presents.” However, it wasn’t just Tyra that influenced Janice to quit ANTM. She also revealed it was the CoverGirl cosmetics company that would select the winner each cycle. “The chance to have a CoverGirl contract campaign for a year was chosen by CoverGirl and not the model, not the judges,” Janice claimed.
Janice isn’t the only one who had bad experiences with Tyra on America’s Next Top Model. Cycle 17 winner Lisa D’Amato slammed Tyra in an intense video for the ways she and the producers emotionally manipulated her, and other contestants have been vocal about their issues with the show as well. Janice’s revelations may be shocking to the show’s fans (especially how CoverGirl chose the winners), but they’re not too surprising to anyone who’s heard rumors about Tyra’s diva attitude.
