Why Grogu's Lightsaber Is Yellow | Screen Rant

Grogu is building a yellow lightsaber in a Star Wars poster that teases the Child's future after The Mandalorian season 2, and the color choice hints at the direction the character is going in. Grogu's future is currently uncertain following the season 2 finale, which saw Luke Skywalker arrive to take him for training. While The Mandalorian will return for season 3, it remains to be seen whether or not the so-called Baby Yoda will be back as well, and if so just in what sort of capacity.

Grogu may well reunite with Din Djarin, but his more immediate future is with Luke, where he's set to resume his Jedi training. With that comes the need for a lightsaber, something that's been teased to be in the works. Lucasfilm released a poster of Grogu constructing his lightsaber alongside Luke, and while it isn't an official tease as such for The Mandalorian season 3, it does suggest that the Child getting his hands on the classic Jedi weapon is going to happen.

Intriguingly, among the many components for the lightsaber was a yellow lightsaber crystal, which of course indicates that Grogu's lightsaber will itself have a yellow blade. That's typically been an uncommon lightsaber color in Star Wars canon, though it is increasing in its visibility, so it isn't too surprising to see Grogu getting a yellow lightsaber - but what does it mean for his character? Most immediately, Grogu having a yellow lightsaber gives him a connection to both Luke and Rey: the former has one in between losing his blue saber and making his green one, while Rey unveils hers at the ends of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. If Disney wanted to capitalize on Rey's saber in particular, then giving a similar lightsaber to the most marketable Star Wars character would fit. More so, it makes a link between two prominent students of Luke, showing how both could take on his teachings for forging new ways ahead for the Jedi. Both characters were already intertwined by their use of Force heal, and this would further connect them.

Generally, yellow lightsabers have been associated with ideas around balance in Star Wars. In Star Wars Legends, they were wielded by Jedi Sentinels, who sought to find balance between the other strands of the Order, the more peaceful and knowledgable Consulars and the combative Guardians. For Rey herself, the yellow lightsaber reflected her new path, moving further away from the dogma of the past and suggesting a greater sense of balance in the Force, not just because the Sith have been destroyed again but because the Jedi can change and move away from the fear that hindered the old Order.

For Grogu, then, it could be a hint at his own path. To find a balance between the light and dark within him, since he has tapped into both sides in The Mandalorian (and of course, if you mix red and green, traditionally colors of the Sith and the Jedi, you get yellow). But it would also work, like the Sentinels, to find the balance between the two different orders he belongs to: the Jedi and the Mandalorians. Grogu's future presumably will take him back to Din eventually, and one of the most compelling theories is that he becomes the next Mandalorian Jedi. That would point to him wielding the Darksaber instead, but a yellow lightsaber could give him something that's more his own and very much part of his specific training, while still being symbolic of his journey.

Similarly, it also reflects how his story is changing. Rey gets a yellow lightsaber when she becomes a Skywalker, while another was wielded by Asajj Ventress, coming after she lost her red lightsabers and returned home, enhancing her reputation as a bounty hunter and serving as a pivotal turning point in her own arc. If the idea of a yellow lightsaber in Star Wars, then, is to reflect growth, change, and finding one's true place, then Grogu getting one as he begins training as a Jedi with Luke Skywalker would fit with this own major twist in his story in The Mandalorian.
