In Dark Horse Comics’ forthcoming The All-Nighter, vampires become superheroes. The book will reunite the creative team of the Eisner award-winning Afterlift: writer Chip Zdarsky, artist Jason Loo, colorist Paris Alleyne, letterer Aditya Bidikar and editor Allison O’Toole to tell a story of bored vampires trying to do the right thing. The book is scheduled for release on February 15, 2022 in print, and will be available as a Comixology Original as well.
Vampires have a long history in comic books, first appearing in horror comics of the late 1940’s/early 1950’s. They were unfortunately sidelined for almost 15 years due to the repressive Comics Code Authority, which forbade monsters such as vampires and werewolves. The Code was loosened in the early 1970’s, allowing the undead to once again appear in comics, and they have been part of the scene ever since. Some vampires, such as Dracula, have gone on to become major villains, and this is how most vampires are portrayed—as evil. There are only a few examples of heroic vampires, such as Astro City’s the Confessor or Andrew Bennett, of I…Vampire. Dark Horse’s new The All-Nighter looks to add another hero to that small list.
Dark Horse sent out a press release containing plot information as well as a look at the cover. The All-Nighter refers to a special late-night only diner run by vampires. In this world, some vampires are trying to integrate into mainstream society. One of the vampires, Alex, a superhero fan stuck flipping burgers at the All-Nighter; bored and wanting to do something more with his life, Alex decides to become a superhero, a decision that will have huge ramifications for Alex and everyone around him.
A common criticism of vampire books and films are the lack of originality, and the sense that it has all been done before; the trick then is to put a fresh spin on the genre and find something new, and The All-Nighter looks to do just that. Examples of heroic vampires are few and far between, which makes The All-Nighter stand out even more. Fans still fondly recall the Confessor to this day, and I…Vampire was an underrated gem of the New 52. The creative team is a proven one as well, having worked together on the award-winning Afterlift; they are excited to work together again on The All-Nighter.
Dark Horse Comics' The All-Nighter promises to be a vampire story unlike any other, one that depicts them in a positive light, as they step up and try to become superheroes.
