Thanks to a quirky fan mod, Red Dead Redemption 2’s Arthur Morgan proves that the deadliest creature isn’t man, but a little green bird. As is the case with Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5, players have been going beyond the boundaries of Red Dead Redemption 2’s 1899 American Midwest sandbox to make their own fun with incredibly comical results.
These players have used mods to turn Arthur Morgan into a Superman-like being of nearly infinite power, transform Red Dead Redemption 2's steeds into giant cougars and wolves, or even allow themselves to finally take righteous vengeance against the loathsome Micah Bell. Other mods aren’t quite as drastic, instead adding VR headset support or a trusty canine companion to Arthur’s quest to take down his old gang one member at a time.
One Red Dead Redemption 2 mod shared by Twitter user cosmicray takes things to a whole other level by transforming the player character into a small Carolina Parakeet. Things start fairly normal and then take a turn into left field almost immediately, with Arthur Morgan flipping out of his wagon and snacking on some nearby berries. These berries apparently turn him into a Parakeet, allowing him to scurry and fly around and make trouble just as he could as a human. This includes crashing into a saloon and shattering every window and bottle in sight before the berries wear off and he reverts to his human form.
The video above appears to have been taken from a much longer Red Dead Redemption 2 mod video on YouTube originally posted by user BedBananas. While not every mod appearing in the video is listed, BedBananas does mention in the description of the RDR2 mod video that most of the ones on display were created by "Weds," a creator who goes by the username WEDS_GARBAGEDAY on Twitter.
Even without players transforming into them by way of magic berries, the animals of Red Dead Redemption 2 can be a form of entertainment in and of themselves thanks to Rockstar’s super-detailed NPC AI - which some RDR2 players have even used for research purposes. Deer will spar with each other over food (or even attack the player if they aren’t too careful), predators will track down and devour prey, and Arthur's many horses each have their own temperament based on their size, job, and the kind of saddle Arthur uses to ride them.
Player mods have been known to turn the normally grounded Red Dead Redemption 2 into a truly bizarre experience, but seeing Arthur eat magic berries and wreck a saloon as a little green Parakeet is a step that few could see coming. There really is no limit to what players can do within Red Dead Redemption 2’s framework, and given some nifty reprogramming a tiny bird can be just as dangerous as a battle-hardened gang of outlaws.
