Pokémon GO Helped One Player Lose 40 Pounds & Manage His Diabetes

One player has credited Pokémon GO for their father's impressive 40-pound weight loss, as well as enabling him to manage his diabetes. Pokémon GO is one of the most successful mobile games currently on the market; its engaging concept and regular updates make it a mainstay for many fans.

When Pokémon GO first made its debut in 2016, it captivated many Pokémon fans. By the end of the year, the app had already been downloaded more than 500 million times by intrepid trainers, and that number has continued to rise in the years since. Thanks to the nature of Pokémon GO, which sees players physically leaving their homes and venturing out in the world to capture new Pokémon, the game has been credited with increasing business revenue due to an upsurge in foot traffic. Another area that Pokémon GO has received praise for is the elevated levels of physical activity in its players. While many games are a static affair, Pokémon GO expects players to walk around and remain active for the entire duration of play.

And it is this simple gameplay mechanic in Pokémon GO that has resulted in one person praising the app for the health benefits their father has received from the game. Sharing their story on Reddit, Big_Then revealed that their father was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. However, since he started playing Pokémon GO, he has managed to lose 40 pounds, and his “blood sugar levels have returned to normal.” According to Big_Then, their father’s doctor has said that “as long as he keeps up the exercise and has a good diet, the diabetes will stay in remission.” Big_Then finished their story by stating that they “couldn’t be more thankful for (Pokémon GO).”

Obviously, while Pokémon GO may well be a large part of Big_Then’s father’s motivation for getting up and moving, it must be stressed that the app itself is not a cure for diabetes or obesity on its own. It is thanks to his increased physical activity and his healthy diet that he has seen such welcome results, and ownership of Pokémon GO is not a prerequisite for having such a lifestyle.

Still, Pokémon GO does deserve credit for inspiring Big_Then's father to start pursuing a more active life. The game had enough appeal to cause a social phenomenon when it launched in 2016, and five years later its formula is still being replicated by games like The Witcher: Monster Slayer, which released on July 21st. AR games like these are a young development in the gaming industry, and if Big_Then's Reddit post is accurate, they can have considerable advantages as well.
