Lucifer's Obsession With Bones & 9 Other Shows Mentioned By TV Characters

Shows mentioned inside other shows, by characters about other characters. For viewers, knowing and watching the same show as their favorite characters is a funny same-reality connection. It shows that despite the character's universe, they are also capable of binge-watching and obsessing over their own favorite shows and characters.

Depending on the nature of the show, whether it's a sitcom or a science-fiction-focused series, it's more realistic for some characters to be watching a given show than others. Most shows have characters mentioning other shows in passing, through a quote or something revealed during a conversation, while others have it as a big part of the character's personality.

10 Carlton Doesn't Want To Miss Saved By The Bell

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990) season 4 episode, "The Hex and the Single Guy," a Halloween episode, shows the family holding a seance to connect with Hilary's ex-fiance.

When the psychic is unable to "traverse the void," during their time together, he suggests the family come together again tomorrow night to make the connection. Carlton scoffs and says, "And miss Saved by the Bell (1989)? I don't think so." Carlton reacts as any fan would.

9 Kelly Bundy Watches Friends 

In the show Married...With Children (1987), Al Bundy walks into the living room to see his two children, Kelly and Bud, watching TV. He asks what they're watching.

Kelly responds with "Friends," to which Al says the memorable and quotable line, "Friends. Don't have em, don't need em, sure as hell don't wanna watch em." Friends began seven years after Married...With Children. 

8 Turk Night Features Gilmore Girls

During his nights alone in his place, also known as "Turk night," Turk watches whatever is on ESPN, including Gilmore Girls (2000). "Mothers and daughters... they speak so fast but they speak so true."

And of course, because Turk and J.D are the best of friends,  Turk calls J.D and the two discuss the episodes that they were just watching separately. When Turk asks if J.D has seen the episode, J.D mentions he is too mad at Loreli to talk, hanging up on Turk.

7 Brooklyn Nine-Nine Characters Mentioning Various Shows

Multiple characters in Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013) mention popular television shows. Bones (2005) is revealed to be inside Holt and Kevin's DVR and also mentioned in conversation. Jake, like many who have seen Friends (1994) compares himself and his personality to the characters of the show.

Game of Thrones (2011) is mentioned in more than 10 different episodes by multiple characters. Charles is revealed, by Rosa, to be afraid of the show Grimm (2011) as it has given him nightmares. And Rosa and Charles are shown discussing the season finale of Gilmore Girls (2000).

6 Harvey Specter & His References

Fan-favorite show Suits (2011) is known for embedding quotes and references from movies and television shows into the character's conversations. Harvey Specter and Michael Ross are often at the forefront of those types of banter.

A memorable scene of the two in Mike's apartment revolves around the well-known Seinfeld (1989) phrase," these pretzels are making me thirsty." The show also references Game of Thrones (2011), Frasier (1993), Downton Abbey (2010), and Battlestar Galactica.  

5 Penelope Watching Outlander

In the season 4 episode," Boundaries," of One Day at a Time (2017), Penelope mentions watching Outlander (2014) with a bottle of wine in bed while she had her place to herself.

When Penelope says this in group therapy and is asked what the show is about, a fellow member gives this description; "Outlander is a show about this woman who touches this rock and they get sent back in time to have sex with this super hot Scottish dude to save her life. It's quality television Pam, culture yourself."

4 Abed Appearing On Cougar Town

During the season 2 episode "Critical Film Studies," of Community (2009), Abed mentions that he was once given the opportunity to appear on the show Cougar Town (2009). Cougar Town is Abed's favorite show.

This turned into an actual crossover, with Abed's story of soiling his pants due to nerves on set revealed as true in the season 2 finale, "Something Good Coming, Part 2" of Cougar Town. Abed had the chance to be involved in a show he watched, something many fans would love to be able to do.

3 Sheldon & His Pop Culture Interests

The Big Bang Theory (2007) is big on referencing other television shows. From FireflyBattlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, and Star Trek, Sheldon is a huge fan of pop culture, especially those within the science-fiction and fantasy realms.

He often wears t-shirts that reflect his interests, including his favorite shows and comics. One of Sheldon's routines includes waking up on Saturday morning, making himself a very specific bowl of cereal, and watching Doctor Who.

2 Dwight & Battlestar Galactica

"Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica," is one of the most quoted phrases from The Office (2005). Dwight's love affair with the show Battlestar Galactica (2004) is no secret, less of a secret than his affair with Angela.

1 Lucifer's Obsession With Bones 

"Actually, you're clearly Booth, I'm Bones, obviously" - words spoken by a freshly Bones (2005) marathoned Lucifer. The Lucifer (2016) season 3 episode "The Angel of San Bernardino," features several clips of the series Bones as Lucifer binge watches the show during his week of sleep avoidance.

The binge leads to Lucifer acting like any die-hard fan of their favorite show, with the Devil quoting and absorbing the information into his own reality.
