There are multiple ways to lock a MacBook, including a key-based shortcut. Which method is right will often be determined by the situation, but the shortcode option can prove particularly useful when quickly wanting to lock the screen for a short period of time. Considering the amount of personal information and data these devices have access to, it is worth knowing some of the quickest options for locking Apple’s notebook.

MacBooks remain a popular option for those looking for a more portable solution than a desktop device, such as a Mac or Windows computer. However, they are still devices that house data and that can make them vulnerable to not only physical theft, but data theft as well.

Like Windows, macOS comes with a number of key combination shortcuts for common tasks. For example, copy and pasting, printing, opening a new tab, and even shutting the system down. When it comes to locking the screen, it is just a matter of holding down the Control, Command and “Q” keys at the same time. The screen will immediately be locked, allowing the user to move away without worrying about the MacBook being accessed by someone else.

While the shortcut is a quick and easy way to lock the screen, it is not the only one. In fact, it is not even the quickest. For example, the MacBook user can simply close the lid and the MacBook will enter a locked state, requiring the user to log back in again with their password when the lid is reopened. Another very common option is to use the Apple menu. By clicking on the Apple logo, the user can then click on the “Lock Screen” option in the menu to lock the screen. Granted, this is not quite as quick as the shortcut or closing the lid, but it doesn’t require remembering the right key combination or the lid to be constantly opened and closed.

Regardless of the preferred method, routinely locking a MacBook when not in use is an important process. These devices are continually becoming more connected to a user’s personal information and data and while locking a MacBook won’t stop the various online threats that exist, it certainly will help to stop any nearby prying eyes and fingers from gaining access to the user’s information.
