Legendary game developer Hideo Kojima has revealed the upcoming Death Stranding Director's Cut isn't really a director's cut and that he's not a fan of the subtitle. The new PS5-exclusive Death Stranding was announced earlier this summer with a parody of Metal Gear Solid and promises new content as well as technical upgrades for the latest Sony console. However, "Director's Cut" isn't what Kojima believes it should be called.
Kojima is one of the most highly-regarded developers in gaming, being the mastermind behind the classic Metal Gear series. After leaving Konami in 2015, Kojima and his development studio, Kojima Productions, got to work on their next game, the star-studded Death Stranding, which first released in 2019 as a PS4 exclusive. The game then launched on PC in 2020, and while the two editions were largely the same game, Death Stranding PC does include content not found in the original PS4 release. It introduced Cyberpunk 2077 and Half-Life-themed add-ons that will be available for the first time on console thanks to Death Stranding Director's Cut, which releases later this summer.
Taking to Twitter to discuss the title of the upcoming Death Stranding Director's Cut, Kojima explained that the game isn't so much a director's cut as it is an expanded version of the initial release. Stating why he himself doesn't like to call it "Death Stranding Director's Cut," Kojima said:
"A director's cut in a movie is an additional edit to a shortened version that was either released reluctantly because the director did not have the right to edit it, or because the running time had to be shortened. In the game, it is not what was cut, but what was additionally produced that was included. [Director's] Plus? So, in my opinion, I don't like to call "director's cut".
Kojima's words are explained further in a recent PlayStation Blog post. Unlike a typical director's cut featuring content cut from the original vision, Death Stranding Director's Cut content has been created for the expanded version of the game. According to Jay Boor, head of publishing at Kojima Productions, everything new in the expanded edition was "all built and developed from the ground up". The developer further explained that the fresh content "isn’t simply bolted on either, it’s been carefully woven into the core game experience and will be made available through discovery as you play."
As for the new content players can expect, the expanded edition of the game will introduce a host of new gameplay options and missions. Death Stranding Director's Cut includes Very Hard mode, as well as racing, a firing range, new gameplay modes, missions, areas, and an expanded storyline, alongside a host of technical improvements over the PS4 version. Gamers who already own the PS4 version of the game will be able to upgrade to the Director's Cut for a $10 fee, and player progression will transfer over.
Although Hideo Kojima doesn't like the name of his game's re-release, Death Stranding Director's Cut is shaping up to be a must-play game for PS5 owners. The game will take advantage of the PS5 DualSense controllers, offering haptic feedback and "bespoke adaptive trigger resistance". The title will offer two picture modes: Performance Mode with upscaled 4K and up to 60FPS, and Fidelity Mode in native 4K. Both modes will support HDR, and the expanded version of Death Stranding will have ultra-wide support.
