Jungle Cruise Posters Have New Look At Édgar Ramirez’s Armored Villain

Disney has revealed two new posters for the upcoming Jungle Cruise movie offering a better look at Édgar Ramirez's villain Aguirre. Ramirez stars in the action-adventure alongside Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall, Paul Giamatti, Jesse Plemons, and Andy Nyman. Helmed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Jungle Cruise is based on the iconic Disneyland attraction of the same name.

The story for the film centers on a 20th century riverboat captain hired by a British scientist to journey with her and her brother into a jungle in search of the mystical Tree of Life. They'll compete against a German expedition, along with deadly elements and animals. Development on a Jungle Cruise adaptation has been underway for nearly 20 years, with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen signing on to star in 2011 until the project was retooled for Johnson in 2015. Becoming one of the first high-profile films to see a release delay last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Jungle Cruise is now right around the corner from its highly-anticipated arrival.

With only two weeks left until the adventure begins, Disney and Dolby have unveiled new posters for Jungle Cruise. In addition to inviting audiences aboard for the long-awaited adaptation, the new posters also offer a better look at Ramirez's armored-up villain mercenary, Aguirre. Up to this point, most of the marketing for Jungle Cruise has put a spotlight on Johnson, Blunt, and Whitehall's oddball chemistry, as well as the humorous action and adventure throughout the film. While the first trailer for the movie did offer a brief glimpse at Ramirez and Plemons' villains, the former has been kept mostly under wraps. Generally being described as a deadly mercenary hired by the German expedition, the original Jungle Cruise trailer did tease a supernatural element for the character akin to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but the new posters offer better insight into the character and the role he may play in the story.

The setting of Jungle Cruise has generally been kept to a non-specific region, but Ramirez's armored appearance in the new posters does appear very reminiscent of the wardrobe of Spanish conquistadors. With the Disneyland ride simulating several major rivers, including those in Asia, Africa, and South America, the armor does seem to indicate the latter setting for the film and a possible exploration of ancient mythologies in the region. Only time will tell what Ramirez's villain brings to the story when Jungle Cruise arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on July 30.
