Batman v Superman: SnyderVerse Crew Debate If Lex Luthor Peed in a Jar

Various crew members from Zack Snyder's past movies weigh in on whether Lex Luthor actually peed in a jar in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Snyder's second DCEU outing was, at the time, possibly the biggest live-action DC film yet. It brought together iconic heroes Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill), as well as introduced Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). On top of all that, it began to lay the foundation for the Justice League, and it featured one of the biggest DC villains of all time in Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg).

Not unlike Jared Leto's portrayal of the Joker, Eisenberg's take on Luthor proved to be somewhat controversial. Eisenberg brought a zany, fast-talking sensibility to the character, and it didn't win over every single fan. Nevertheless, Batman v Superman's Luthor definitely made an impression through his unnerving actions, which seemingly included peeing in a jar to intimidate Senator Finch (Holly Hunter). Exactly whether he actually did so has remained up in the air, though now some experts have chimed in.

Four members of Snyder's crew appeared on TheFilmJunkee this past weekend and were dealt with the ultimate question: Did Lex Luthor personally pee in the jar? Stunt coordinator and second unit director Damon Caro began by saying only Snyder can give a true answer, but then shared that his opinion is that "he absolutely did." VFX supervisor Bryan Hirota agreed and chimed in, "The character of Lex in that movie, a hundred percent, my opinion is he would do that." Meanwhile, fellow VFX supervisor John "DJ" Des Jardin quipped, "I actually think Jesse peed in there." Production designer Patrick Tatopoulos also agreed.

While it's true that only Snyder can give a definitive ruling on this matter, it does seem very in-character for Lex to taunt Finch with his own urine. Eisenberg's iteration of the character is chaotic and revels in making others uncomfortable, and ominously gifting someone with pee (disguised as "Granny's Peach Tea") just before they die is one way to do that. In the grand scheme of Batman v Superman, this is hardly the most important plot point, but it is one of the most confounding.

This year, Luthor played a very small role in Snyder's Justice League, appearing in the epilogue to help set up a future movie. As Snyder himself appears to be done with the DCEU, fans likely won't get to see more of Eisenberg's performance as the Superman villain. Though his take on the character in Batman v Superman wasn't necessarily the most well-received, no one can say it wasn't memorable. That people are still debating whether he truly peed in a jar says a lot about his overall legacy in the DCEU - fans can decide if that's a good or bad thing.
