Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wind Waker Remasters Supposedly Still Coming

A games industry insider suggests that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker are still getting remastered, despite a lack of any announcements to that effect during the E3 2021 Nintendo Direct. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is getting a Nintendo Switch remaster for the franchise's 35th anniversary - and the reason why seems more clear after Breath of the Wild 2 gameplay revealed that Hyrule has been expanded to the skies - but Skyward Sword's relative unpopularity has left some veteran fans disappointed.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has been remastered for Nintendo Switch and is set to launch on July 16. Though the pre-orders for the game sold out on Amazon a few days after its announcement, some fans are still annoyed that Nintendo chose the very linear, motion control-oriented Skyward Sword over other classic Zelda franchise options. Contrary to the game's poor reputation among the core gamer crowd, it was still popular on the Wii and has its fans to this day, and its origin story is crucial to the branching franchise timelines. Since The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is being enhanced for Switch, some were expecting to see other entries be announced for the same treatment at E3 2021.

According to VGC's Andy Robinson back in February, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker are also getting remastered in 2021 for the 35th anniversary. “For those disappointed with the Skyward Sword remaster, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are 100% coming this year,” Robinson claimed, giving fans hope that “at least one good 3D Zelda” was on its way. Robinson retracted his February 17 claim after Tuesday's Nintendo Direct, where there were no announcements for any new remasters. Following outcry from Zelda fans, Robinson clarified that "predicting dates is a fool's game and I should never have used "100%" in the original tweet," but he still holds that players should "sit tight," seeming to imply Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker on Switch are still imminent.

Notably and most recently, Andy Robinson was one of the first to discuss Super Mario 3D All-Stars prior to it being revealed in September 2020. In a separate tweet reply, Robinson agreed that it would be strange for Nintendo to announce two other remasters with one yet to be released, further insinuating their reveals could still be on the way.

Nintendo will likely see how The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword sells before announcing any further projects. It’s also possible that the company is saving those remasters for a 2022 release date, just in case Breath of the Wild 2 needs to be delayed. The current favorites for Switch remasters are The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but which rumors will pan out - if any - remains to be seen for now.
