The Reminiscence trailer is set to an evocative original song by singer-songwriter Amber Mark featuring Lonr and Gitty. Written and directed by Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy, Reminiscence is a visionary sci-fi action-thriller starring Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, and Daniel Wu. Reminiscence will release simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max on August 20, 2021.
Reminiscence is set in the Miami of the not-too-distant future that has been flooded by climate change as the world recovers from a devastating war. Hugh Jackman plays Nick Bannister, a private investigator of the mind, whose business allows his clients to live in the memories of their past relationships. When a mysterious woman named Mae (Rebecca Ferguson) enters Nick's life, it sparks a passionate love affair between them. But Mae's sudden disappearance implicates her in a series of crimes. Nick becomes obsessed with discovering the truth about Mae as he plunges deeper into the dangerous world of Reminiscence to learn her secrets.
Reminiscence's trailer promises eye-popping visual splendor and plenty of action as well as a romantic mystery at the film's core, and the song choice perfectly reflects the world Lisa Joy created. The song in Reminiscence's trailer is Amber Mark featuring Lonr and Gitty's "Save My Love", which was composed for the film. As Joy described her musical collaborators:
[With] their internationalism and their soulfulness, [they] would be the perfect singers for this... We wanted it to have that sense of swagger and scope, but also a bit of sensuality and mystery... Together they came up with this incredible song that I’ve listened to now a gazillion times, which is a good sign.
"Save My Love" not only speaks to the haunting romance between Nick and Mae in Reminiscence but also to the movie's overall theme of the power and seductiveness of memory. In Reminiscence, the world and society have become so damaged from war and climate change that people no longer look forward to the future and opt instead to live in their memories of the past, which is where businesses like Nick Bannister's come in. Hugh Jackman describes Nick as "a broken man... disengaged and distrusting of the world. And into that world comes the incredible Mae, played by Rebecca Ferguson, who’s extraordinary. That changes everything.”
The power of memory and living in the past inspired Lisa Joy to conceive Reminiscence while she was vacationing at her grandfather's house in England and discovered an old photograph of a woman he knew long ago. "Something about her made such an impression that he named his house after her and kept that photo of her after all those years,” Joy explained. “And it made me start to think about memory and our lives in general, the moments that pass by and maybe disappear... How nice would it be to be able to go back to those memories fully for a moment, to live that life and feel the way you felt when you experienced them.”
Naturally, music is a crucial aspect of Reminiscence, and Joy aptly described the power of a song or a piece of music as "the original reminiscence machine." Joy hired Westworld's composer, Ramin Djawadi, to compose the score for Reminiscence, but the film is also using original songs like Amber Mark and Lonr's "Save My Love" to evoke all of the powerful and necessary moods and feelings in viewers.
