Battlefield 2042 was one of the many projects that appeared before the E3 Expo officially began. Announced as the long-awaited sequel to the less than stellar Battlefield 5, Battlefield 2042 seeks to remedy some of the mistakes made by its predecessor. While EA was eager to reveal many details about the new project, it left one key question in the minds of players: what is the secret multiplayer mode that could not be revealed at E3? While Battlefield 2042's gameplay seemed revolutionary, working towards specific goals within matches is a vital part of the equation. Several other game modes were confirmed that filled many expectations that players have come to have for Battlefield.
The first Battlefield 2042 mode announced was Conquest, which has been a staple of the franchise since its first installment. The mode pits two teams against one another on sprawling maps, vying for dominance over various Control Points. This mode often sees players utilize different methods of fighting, using different classes, vehicles, and strategies to claim victory. Breakthrough is the second mode returning to Battlefield 2042, which separates teams into attackers and defenders and progresses through the map as the attackers claim different points, or are pushed back. The last mode has few details released about it and is called Hazard Zone. Hazard Zone focuses on a more competitive style of gameplay, with a heavier emphasis on squad-based tactics. These game modes will be joined by Battlefield 2042's fourth unannounced mode.
Despite the lack of information about Battlefield 2042's hidden multiplayer mode, the information players have on the game offers some hints as to what it might be. One of the biggest clues for Battlefield 2042's mystery mode is that it will be developed by DICE LA and "be a first for the franchise." This eliminates the possibility of Battlefield 2042 launching with a retired game mode. It will instead act as a completely new experience designed for fans of the franchise. Another hint players have is that the mode will act as a "love letter" to long-time Battlefield fans. It's difficult to discern what this means, but examining the community's wants over the years could point fans in the right direction.
Despite the current popularity surrounding battle royale modes in first-person shooters, Battlefield 2042 will not have a battle royale. This role will instead be filled by Battlefield 2042's new multiplayer mode "Hazard Zone," which is described as "high-stakes, squad-based action." This eliminates the possibility of the unannounced game mode being a battle royale, but opens other opportunities for the game. Free-for-all modes don't necessarily have to be battle royales, and the test of gunplay and skill has always been at the core of shooters like Battlefield and Call of Duty. King of the Hill and Slayer modes are common throughout the genre, so it's possible EA could be taking advantage of a more traditional experience in Battlefield 2042.
EA has announced that Battlefield 2042 will have no story mode. This absence could point to some sort of story multiplayer mode. Could the "love letter" refer to playing as characters from past Battlefield games in some sort of "hero mode"? Hero shooters have seen an increase in popularity recently in games such as Overwatch, Apex Legends, and Paladins. Reviving Battlefield characters from campaigns of past games could speak to a deeper love of the community's commitment to the series. Utilizing characters from previous installments of the series could also spice up gameplay with special abilities unique to each character. DICE has some experience adapting hero-like characters from their work in Battlefront 2, meaning that their team would certainly be a good choice for a hero mode.
All the details about Battlefield 2042's mystery mode will likely be revealed at the EA Play Live Event on July 22nd, a little over a month away. While there is only speculation about this unknown mode, Battlefield 2042 is shaping up to be a memorable experience for fans of the shooter genre. Battlefield 2042 is set to release October 22nd, 2021 for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
