Wellington Paranormal Trailer Shows Ghosts & Aliens In WWDITS Spinoff

The CW debuts a new trailer for the What We Do in the Shadows spin-off series, Wellington Paranormal, confirming the horror-comedy's July premiere. The mockumentary show centers on New Zealand Police Officers Minogue and O'Leary from the original film as they investigate various supernatural cases around the country's capital city. Film co-writers and co-directors Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement created the series with the latter also acting as a writer and director.

The show originally debuted on Television New Zealand 2 in 2018 and has been a hit for the network, earning two additional seasons, a Christmas special, and a season 4 order. The characters also expanded into public service campaigns for recruitment for the New Zealand Police, Police Safety, and healthy practices during COVID-19. As audiences await season 3 of FX's What We Do in the Shadows series later this year, The CW is bringing Minogue and O'Leary back to the States a little sooner.

After announcing the premiere last month, The CW has released an extended trailer for the first season of Wellington Paranormal. In addition to confirming the July premiere date, the teaser offers a look at the various cases O'Leary and Minogue will investigate, including aliens, ghosts, and more. Check out the trailer below:

It may only run a little longer than a minute, but the first trailer for the series should prove plenty exciting for those who fell in love with Waititi and Clement's original film. Carrying over the deadpan tone of the original film and not letting the small screen format hold them back from some solid visual effects, the show looks to be just as strong of a transition for the franchise as FX's Emmy-nominated hit. One of the biggest points of interest in the trailer is the fact that Minogue and O'Leary have a clear grasp on the existence of the supernatural.

Given that their last appearance in What We Do in the Shadows saw the duo thoroughly duped by the central group of vampires into believing a dog was the culprit behind a werewolf attack, it's interesting to see the leads of Wellington Paranormal embrace the supernatural cases they're experiencing in the series. No matter the explanation, the return of Minogue and O'Leary and the whole New Zealand horror-comedy world is plenty enticing. The series is set to premiere on The CW on July 11 and will air on HBO Max the following day.
