Samsung's next pair of true wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds 2, have been fully revealed in a set of leaked product renders. The upcoming earbuds are set to launch later this summer, likely alongside the upcoming Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Over the past few years, Samsung has shown its commitment to the wireless earbud niche. The first Galaxy Buds hit the scene in March 2019 as a direct competitor to AirPods. Unfortunately, they left a lot to be desired. Samsung went back to the drawing board, got its ducks in a row, and the earbuds it's released since have been much better. The Galaxy Buds+ improved on the original Galaxy Buds in virtually every way, the Galaxy Buds Live introduced a radical new design, and last year's Galaxy Buds Pro stand out as Samsung's best release yet — offering excellent sound quality and active noise cancellation.
Rumor has it that Samsung has more earbuds planned for 2021, and thanks to a new leak from 91Mobiles, they've now been fully revealed as the Galaxy Buds 2. The site published a heap of official-looking product renders for the Buds 2, and right off the bat, they take a lot of inspiration from the Buds Pro. The in-ear design of the earbuds is very similar, as is the squircle case that the Buds 2 rest in when they aren't being used. The Galaxy Buds Pro design stood out for being equally practical and comfortable, so seeing it return for the Buds 2 isn't a bad thing at all.
Given that the design is so similar, how does Samsung plan to differentiate the Galaxy Buds 2 from its past releases? For starters, active noise cancellation isn't expected at all. The Buds 2 will still have 'active noise reduction,' but proper ANC won't be present. It's also worth mentioning that expected colors for the Buds 2 are quite a bit different from any previous Samsung release. Like the Google Pixel Buds A-Series that launched at the beginning of June, the Galaxy Buds 2 has a two-tone color scheme. There are four colors to choose from — including white, black, purple, and green — but those colors are only seen on the earbuds and inside the case. The outside of the case, regardless of which color someone chooses, is white.
While other specifications for the Galaxy Buds 2 remain murky, what is clear is that Samsung will likely market these as a lower-cost alternative to the Buds Pro — possibly coming in at $150 or less. Samsung has continued to sell the Buds Live and Buds+ as its lower-cost earbud alternatives, but replacing those with the Buds 2 could be a great move to simplify the lineup. A proper announcement is likely coming in July or August, so stay tuned for more details coming very soon.
