Concept art has been leaked for Sonic Prime, Netflix’s upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog series. The show is one of several non-game Sonic projects currently in development, which also include the animated miniseries Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps and the live-action movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sonic Prime is animated by Wild Brain and produced by Sega, Wild Brain, and Man of Action.
Sonic the Hedgehog is no stranger to the world of television, having featured in multiple cartoons over the past few decades. Sonic Prime is somewhat different though, in that it comes during a recent peak in popularity for Sonic. The immense success of the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie catapulted the franchise back into the pop culture spotlight. That resurgence, combined with Sega’s ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog 30th anniversary celebrations, has meant a rise in both attention and expectations for future Sonic projects.
The world of Sonic Prime has now been revealed prematurely by a series of leaked concept art images acquired by Sonic news site Tails’ Channel. The images show new looks for Sonic and Tails, what appears to be a jungle warrior version of Amy Rose, and multiple different versions of Dr. Eggman, including a baby. Sega previously revealed that the show would set Sonic on an adventure through the multiverse, which would explain the portals in the images and the new versions of classic characters. At this time, there has been no official statement on the leaked art from the studio side. Screen Rant has reached out to Netflix for comment. Check out the Sonic Prime images below.
If the concept art is official, Sonic Prime is already looking good. The dimension-hopping storyline has lots of fun potential for wacky new worlds and fresh takes on old characters, and the cyber-future aesthetic shown in the images harkens back to the original Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon in some cool ways. With Amy and Tails seemingly confirmed, it seems likely that other fan-favorites like Knuckles the Echidna and Shadow the Hedgehog could feature in the series as well.
Right now, Sonic Prime is planned for a 2022 release on Netflix. That means it won’t be far removed from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which is scheduled for a theatrical premiere on April 8, 2022. While the two projects are significantly different, they both seem to be embracing the colorful and adventurous spirit that’s kept the franchise popular with kids for so long. With luck, Sonic the Hedgehog fans will have two great new stories to enjoy in 2022.
